I never considered buying wholesale DVDs or Blu-rays until I wrote this article, but now I’m intrigued by the whole concept. For as little as $50, I can add a select group of films to my collection for as little as $3 each. And while some of the titles offered are awful, there’s a surprising number of high-quality releases from the biggest studios in Hollywood.

Below, I’ve listed some of the leading wholesale distributors in the United States, as well as including prices and examples of their products. If you watch a lot of movies, you might want to consider this option.

Mountain View Movies – Located in New York, Mountain View Movies is a leading source for wholesale movies (both in DVD and Blu-ray format) and video games. They specialize in buying surplus stock, liquidation, and closeouts for next to nothing, then turning around and reselling to other vendors. Mountain View Movies claims to offer the lowest wholesale prices in the business, although I’m unsure if that’s true or not. However, I do know they’ve got lots of titles that are new, sealed, and compatible with NTSC Region 1 players. These are the original releases, too, not copies or import titles.

Their minimum order is $50, and they offer free shipping on U.S. orders over $300. International customers are also accepted. And in addition to the usual Hollywood blockbuster titles you might expect, Mountain View Movies sells TV series on DVD and Blu-ray, documentaries, and erotic films.

One option is to pick and choose your movies, as long as you meet the $50 minimum order. A selection of DVDs are available from $3.49 each, while Blu-rays often fall into the $5.99 to $8.99 range. Examples of Blu-ray titles include: Where the Wild Things Are ($8.99), Resident Evil: Afterlife ($18.99 for the Steelbook edition), Observe and Report ($5.99), Natural Born Killers ($6.99), Deliverance ($6.99), and Friday the 13th: Killer Cut ($6.99).

But the savings really pile up when you select one of their value packs. An example includes the 100 Wholesale Blockbuster New Release DVDs value pack, with a total price of $349.99 (that’s $3.49 per movie). Some of the titles in this set include Scary Movie 4, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Rush Hour 3, Rocky Balboa, Hot Fuzz, Dawn of the Dead, Casino Royale, and many more.

Wholesale DVDs for Less – There’s no minimum order when you do business with this wholesale DVD and Blu-ray seller, but ordering 100 or more movies will allow you to get a better price (as low as 80 cents per unit). They have wholesale packs suitable for children and adults, and all orders arrive in discrete packaging (yes, they sell hardcore movies, too). And for some odd reason, Wholesale DVDs for less also offers a selection of radio controlled helicopters, so keep that in mind if you’re a fan of such things.

Unlike Mountain View Movies, I saw no indication that Wholesale DVDs for Less allows customers to buy individual movies on Blu-ray and DVD. You’ll need to purchase their bulk lots, but these are numerous and varied. For example, you can buy their 100 Assorted Kung Fu DVDs for $159.99, while 100 Assorted 90’s Movies will cost you $299.99.

Also be sure to keep an eye out for sales. Their 100 Assorted Used DVDs normally sells for $299.99, but it was discounted to $199.99 when I visited their site.

If you’re looking to open up a business selling movies, this is a good place to turn. Their 1000 Assorted Used New Releases sells for $2499.99 and includes titles such as The Bourne Ultimatum, 27 Dresses, Made of Honor, 300, The Departed, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, 3:10 to Yuma, and Taken. Another option is the 100 Assorted Blu-ray DVDs for $799.99, with includes Bad Santa, The English Patient, Friday, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Ella Enchanted, Seven, Sling Blade, Good Will Hunting, and many more.

And don’t forget about their selection of adult DVD packs. An assortment of 25 adult DVDs will cost you $59.99, while a pack of 200 goes for $320. There are also packs that appeal to specific sub-genres, such as teens and blacks. 100 of the latter can be had for $189.

WholesaleDiscs.com – With genres ranging from family films to horror, this wholesale movie distributor ships anywhere within the U.S. and Canada. There’s free shipping within the United States, although the company doesn’t offer wholesale Blu-ray movies at this time. All DVDs are new and factory sealed, and you can choose to either buy according to genre or select a mixed bag of cinematic goodness. The retail value of their DVDs ranges from $9.99 to $24.99, but you’ll be getting them for much less.

Their 4 Mixed DVD Collection lists for $80, but you can buy it for the discounted price of $18.99. The same goes for their 50 Family DVD Collection, which you can purchase for $75 (far less than the retail price of $2000). And for cinema buffs with a lot of money to spend (or those looking to open a video store), check out their 5000 Mixed DVD Collection. It lists for $100,000, but you can buy it for only $3678.

The only downside to this service is that individual titles aren’t listed for each pack. You’ll have no idea what movies you’ll be getting until they arrive in the mail. While the prices are great, this detail makes me likely to turn to one of the other wholesale dealers first.

So the next time you’re itching to add 50 or even 1000 titles to your collection or store, be sure to consult this list of distributors and prices for wholesale DVDs, Blu-rays, and movies. And keep in mind that prices and selection may change over time, so check their sites on a regular basis.

In the old days, people in need of a cinematic fix had to either trek to the movie theatre or visit a brick-and-mortar facility. But advances in technology have changed all that, and now online movies and TV shows can be streamed over your TV or computer, downloaded to your iPod or Blu-ray player, and even delivered to your door by the postal service. Yes, my friends, the times they are a changin’.

If it’s delivered to your home, then you put it back into the mailbox when you’re through (postage is always pre-paid). As soon as that title is received by the service, the next title on your list will be mailed out.

That’s all there is to it. Most services allow you to keep movies out as long as you like, and there are never any pesky late fees to worry about.

Subscription Plans for Online Movies and TV Shows

When you join an online movie service, these are the subscription options you’re most likely to encounter:

• Limited – The customer can only receive a certain number of titles per month, as well as a limited number of movies at a time. This usually applies to the cheaper subscription options, and streaming online movies are often exempt.
• Unlimited – While customers can only have a certain number of movies at home at one time, there’s no limit to the number of movies they can rent in a month.
• Package – Instead of an individual disc, the customer receives a package of discs. All discs in the package are returned at the same time.
• Peer to Peer Trading – Customers exchange movies directly with other members via the mail. This option isn’t used very often.
• Pay-As-You-Go – There is no monthly rental charge with this plan, and customers only pay for the movies that they watch.
• Season Rental – All the movies of an entire film series can be received at once, as well as all the discs in a single season of a television show. All of the discs in a season rental are returned at the same time.

Throttling

Perhaps the most despised practice when it comes to renting online movies and TV shows, throttling occurs when a subscriber rents enough movies in a month to result in the company losing money on the pre-paid postage option. When this happens, the company may slow down the delivery time of movies by having them sent from a delivery center that’s located farther away. All of the major companies have been accused of this practice, and Netflix has even come up with a term to make it sound not as bad: “fairness algorithm.” This has resulted in lawsuits and hard feelings, but throttling isn’t something you’ll have to worry about unless you run through movies like crazy. Still, it does exist, so you might as well be familiar with the practice.

Online Movies for Free

Many cinephiles with an Internet connection enjoy the option of watching online movies for free. As you might expect, there are a number of sites which offer such services without regard for copyright laws, while others provide movies that are in the public domain are have otherwise been licensed. This section will focus on the latter, as I have no desire to get my pants sued off by some overly ambitious lawyer at one of the Hollywood studios. Most of the sites listed below offer free streaming online movies, although the option to download to your computer is sometimes available.

• Hulu – A joint effort between NBC Universal, Disney-ABC Entertainment Group, and Fox Entertainment Group, Hulu allows visitors to watch a number of free streaming movies and TV shows. And I’m not talking about episodes of Sanford and Son; you can view the latest episodes of The Office, The Daily Show, 30 Rock, Saturday Night Live and many other recent hit programs. The movies and episodes are rotated from time to time, and shows that are rotated off the free Hulu site can later be viewed by joining the Hulu Plus subscription service. Some of the current networks that can be viewed on Hulu include: ABC, NBC, FOX, PBS, USA, NFL Network, Bravo, Fuel, Speed, A&E, Oxygen, Versus, G4, FX, Syfy, Sundance, E!, Spike, MTV, Comedy Central, and many more. Viewing options include your computer, television, iPhone, iPad, and iPod.
• Joost – This site includes channels ranging from BET to MTV, and these plenty of sports action and celebrity gossip to keep you entertained. Besides watching Joost on your PC, recent innovations also allow users to go mobile and enjoy it on their portable device.
• TVchannelsfree.com – If you’ve always wondered what people in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe are watching, then give this unique and free website a try. North American programming is included, and a selection of free online movies can also be enjoyed.
• YouTube – There’s a strong chance that you’ve used YouTube over the years to watch fat people falling down and funny animals performing all kinds of tricks. Did you know, however, that numerous motion pictures and television shows can be viewed for free? Some of these are submitted by users, although these are broken up into smaller segments. The site itself also includes a number of films in the public domain, allowing you to watch free streaming movies without a lot of fuss. And once you’re through, you can check out some laughing babies and people accidentally knocking themselves unconscious.
• FEARnet – Want to watch free horror movies online without going to prison or getting fined? That’s where FEARnet comes in, as they offer a rotation of numerous tales of terror. Granted, many of them are of the less-than-brilliant kind, but horror fans have come to expect that from the genre anyway.
• FreeTubeTV – This site includes a large array of channels dedicated to presenting sports, TV shows, religious programming, adult content, as well as business and educational options. A number of free streaming movies are also available, including genres ranging from kung-fu films to sci-fi, horror, and romance.
• Veoh – Combining online movies for free with the social networking craze, Veoh allows users to use webcam images, Facebook pics, or 3D avatars to identify themselves while chatting with other visitors. • Indie Movies Online – Dedicated to supporting independent films, this site offers up the best motion pictures and documentaries made without the interference of major studios. You probably haven’t heard of most of the films playing on this site, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth watching.

Streaming Online Movies

While being able to watch free online movies is a real treat, your selection is often limited. But thanks to the many pay services available, there are hundreds of thousands of movies at your fingertips. If you’re into streaming online movies, be sure to sign up with one of these services. And just in case you’re wondering, I recommend Netflix.

• Netflix – With a library of over 100,000 movies and TV shows, Netflix is the biggest online service in the United States. Members can choose to have films delivered right to their door by the postal service, or you can enjoy streaming online movies on your PC or television set. Numerous membership plans are available, new selections are constantly being added, and their number of delivery centers (which determine how long it takes for a movie to reach you) is second to none. .
• Blockbuster - While their land-based stores are going under in droves, Blockbuster is still plugging along online. They have almost as many movies as Netflix, but they also offer video game rentals. And just like Netflix, you can choose to either have movies delivered to your home or stream them online. Their future is uncertain at the moment, but they make an excellent alternative for anyone who blindly refuses to sign up with Netflix.
• Redbox – While they don’t offer streaming online movies, any list of major Internet film services should include this growing company. Redbox kiosks are located in many convenience stores, supermarkets, and pharmacies, and the movies inside can be rented for online $1 per day. While every step can be performed right at the machine, you can also choose to log into their website and reserve a movie to be picked up when you get off work. A favorite choice for soccer moms.
• GreenCine – If indie and foreign movies are your thing, then be sure to give GreenCine a try. Their library has swelled to include 50,000 titles, and they have more anime than any service offering streaming online movies. Films can also be received via the mail, and a sister service called BlueCine also allows subscribers to receive adult films alongside movies for the family (just be careful not to get the two mixed up). Based in San Francisco, their single shipping center means members on the East Coast may have to wait as long as four days to receive a shipped movie (although one feature ensures that you next film will ship to you as soon as you’ve put the old one in the mailbox).
• VUDU – With this service, you can watch streaming online movies and avoid any bloated subscription fees. You only pay for what you watch, and streaming can be enjoyed via your PC, TV, Playstation 3, or Blu-Ray player. Films are presented in high definition, and movies are available the same day they come out on DVD.
• CinemaNow – Thanks to Best Buy, subscribers to this service can download movies to their PC and even legally burn them to a disc. Their library of titles is slowly expanding, but it looks to be a long time before they challenge streaming online movie giants such as Netflix and Blockbuster.
• BIGFlix – The largest online rental service in India, BIGFlix carries an endless supply of your favorite Bollywood films. They carry over 15,000 films in their library, and you can sign up and enjoy their service from anywhere in the world.
• iTunes – This popular online service sells downloadable online movies and television shows in addition to their vast stock of music. The cost of a movie is cheaper than buying in on DVD, and playback is available on you iPad, iPhone, or iPod.
• Amazon – They sell everything else, so why not movie rentals? In addition to watching streaming online movies that have just come to DVD, you can also catch certain indie films before they’re even released in theatres.
• Big Pond Movies – Owned by the country’s largest Internet provider, Big Pond is only available to residents of Australia. Rentals can be delivered right to your door, or you can choose to watch streaming online movies instead. The latter option allows you access to the movies for a set period of time (usually 48 hours).
• LoveFilm – The top online rental service in the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands, LoveFilm has over 67,000 titles to choose from. Their membership numbers over one-million customers, and movies can either be received via mail or streamed online via your personal computer.
• DVD Avenue – While this U.S. online rental service carries all the blockbuster titles you might expect, they also allow customers to receive video games and adult movies.
• iReel – Available to subscribers in the United States and Canada, iReel specializes in online streaming movies, and titles can be viewed for up to a month. Titles are shown in high definition, although you must pay for each rental in addition to the monthly membership fee.
• eHit.com – Operating since 2001, this online rental service carries both American films and a wide range of motion pictures from Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and China.
• HindiFlix – A U.S.-based online rental service that specializes in films from Bollywood.
• CinFlix – With no late fees and thousands of titles to choose from, this service offers one of the largest selections of foreign (especially Asian) titles.
• DVD2GO – A movie rental service available in the Monterrey and Guadalajara areas of Mexico. That’s assuming, of course, that members of a drug cartel don’t hijack the shipment before it gets to your house.
• Canflix – One of the leading online movie rental services in Canada.
• Zip.ca – The largest online movie rental service in Canada. Over fifty percent of online subscribers in Canada subscribe to this service.
• Cinemail – A Canadian online movie rental service.
• Videomatica – Another Canadian movie rental service that’s available online.
• Musimundo Videoclub – The top online movie renter in the nation of Argentina.
• Cineadomicilio – Colombia’s leading movie rental services, with both brick-and-mortar stores and an online rental option.
• Cinema Paradiso – An online rental service based in the UK.
• OutNow! – Another online movie rental service available in the UK.
• Glorimedia – Online movie rental service available in Germany.
• Videobuster – One of the top services offering online video rentals in Germany.

Of course, keep in mind that almost every online movie rental service will have a similar section, so finding online movies for kids shouldn’t be tough at all.

Who Is Stieg Larsson?

Born in Sweden in 1954, Karl Stig-Erland Larsson was a writer whose real-life exploits rivaled those of his characters. Not only was he an authority on science fiction, but he also worked as a photographer and journalist for numerous publications.

For part of 1977, he trained female guerillas from Eritrea to use grenade launchers.

Larsson’s true passion was political activism, and his dedication to researching and documenting racist and right wing groups in his native country resulted in repeated death threats. He kept a low profile outside of his work, even deciding not to wed his longtime girlfriend due to a law requiring married couples to reveal their home address.

In his spare time, Stieg Larsson enjoyed writing tales of a journalist and a punk hacker who teamed up to expose corruption and bring down conspiracies in Sweden. These stories were for his own enjoyment, and years passed without any attempt to publish them. When Larsson passed away from a heart attack in 2004 at the age of 50, he left behind three unpublished manuscripts, and notes and work for several more.

Since that time, those three manuscripts have become international best-sellers, frequently known as The Millennium Trilogy.

The Millennium Trilogy novels (and movies) in order are:

3. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets‘ Nest

As of early 2010, the books had sold more than 27 million copies in more than 40 countries, and the Swedish film adaptations have been met with critical acclaim and an enthusiastic response at the global box office. Hollywood is even getting in on the action, shooting their own adaptations of the Stieg Larsson Trilogy starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – Investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) opens the film by being convicted of libel and sentenced to a stint behind bars. He doesn’t begin his incarceration for several months, so the crestfallen crusader is trying to figure out what to do next. That’s when he receives a job offer: head to an isolated island and try to solve a girl’s disappearance that occurred 40 years prior. He accepts, not knowing that he’s being spied on by a talented and troubled computer hacker named Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace). Lisbeth is certain that Mikael was set up in the libel case, and she becomes interested in his current investigation. But she has problems of her own, as her latest court-appointed guardian has taken control of her finances and seems unusually interested in her sexual habits. This leads to a number of disturbing scenes, as well as a revenge sequence that will have most audience members cheering. Mikael and Lisbeth eventually meet face-to-face, joining forces to solve a decades-old mystery involving Nazis, mysterious codes, and serial murder.

The Girl Who Played With Fire – Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist return, and this time someone is trying to frame our favorite goth chick for the murder of two journalists and her lecherous guardian from the previous film. But Mikael is convinced of her innocence, and he’s willing to go to great lengths to clear her name. Lisbeth’s father–who she nearly burned to death as a young girl–puts in a sinister appearance, and their reunion is complicated by the presence of a biker gang and a hulking killer who’s incapable of feeling pain. While Lisbeth and Mikael share a lot less screen time in this installment, action fans will enjoy the well-choreographed fight sequences (including one where our heroine gets to show off her hand-to-hand skills).

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest – The Stieg Larsson Trilogy concludes with this entry that’s part conspiracy thriller and part courtroom drama. Having narrowly survived the events of the previous film, Lisbeth Salander is placed on trial for attempted murder. But a massive conspiracy is underway, one designed to place the feisty goth back in an institution under the care of a malevolent physician (if you thought her guardian from the first film was bad, wait until you get a load of this guy). Mikael comes through as usual, convincing his lawyer sister to handle Lisbeth’s case. As both sides present their arguments, a silent madman is still on the loose, and the powers-that-be are determined to silence Lisbeth at any cost. The trilogy is brought to a satisfying conclusion despite having less action than previous installments, and it’s great fun to see Lisbeth take the witness stand in all her pierced and mohawked glory.

• Interviews with the cast and crew of the trilogy

They’ve been growing ever since, and subscribers can choose to receive anywhere from eight DVDs at a time to just a single disc. Delivery centers are located across the United States, and the average delivery time for a movie to arrive at a subscriber’s house is one to two days (with one day being most common). Blu-ray discs are also available for rental, although customers will need to pay an additional $8 fee per month to receive them.
• Blockbuster – As their number of brick-and-mortar stores continues to shrink, Blockbuster focuses more and more on its online subscription service. It’s comparable to Netflix in many ways, and they offer more than 90,000 titles to choose from. Selected films can be streamed online, received through the mail, or picked up from your local Blockbuster location. There are no extra charges for Blu-ray discs, and customers can also rent video games (one of the few services that Netflix doesn’t offer). The most film you can have at your house at one time is three, and renting streaming movies costs an additional fee.
• GreenCine – If you’re a fan of indie, foreign and anime films, then you’ll definitely want to give GreenCine a look. With a library of over 50,000 titles, they specialize in titles that are outside the American cinematic mainstream. They have the largest selection of anime of any online rental service, and they carry a number of movies that Netflix and Blockbuster don’t.
• Redbox – While Redbox doesn’t deliver to your door, you can visit their website and reserve a movie online. Then, all you have to do is visit a local kiosk and retrieve your selected film. Kiosks are located at places like McDonalds and Wal-Mart, and they carry all of the latest new release films. If you’re doing some shopping and need something to take home for the family to enjoy, Redbox is a convenient option. If, however, you’re looking for more artsy films, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
• iTunes – Movie rentals aren’t delivered to your door, but they can be enjoyed on either your PC, Mac, television, or portable device. All the latest titles are available for rental or purchase, and many are available in high definition. Once you start watching your selection, you’ll have 24 hours to complete it before it disappears from your iTunes library. As you might imagine, iTunes has loads of movies to choose from, and you can also pop over and buy some of your favorite tunes from their music store while you’re at it.
• Cafe DVD – With this online movie rental service, you can either choose to rent one movie at a time or join up for a monthly subscription fee. The latter allows you to rent a certain number of films per month. For example, their largest flat fee plan allows subscribers to rent 10 movies per month for a fee of $24.95. To be honest, I have no idea how they’re still in business. For $24.95 per month, you can get as many movies per month as you want with Netflix, not to mention all their streaming online content. If you’re already a Café DVD subscriber, you might want to consider an upgrade to a cheaper and more reliable service.
• CinemaNow – Founded in 1999, CinemaNow allows you to both rent and buy movies online. The latest new release movie can be watched instantly over your TV, and over 10,000 films and TV shows are available under this option. Most movies can be rented and viewed online for $3.99, while purchasing a film and burning it to disc usually runs around $15.95. As of this writing, CinemaNow is owned by Best Buy.
• LoveFilm – Operating in the UK, Germany, and Scandinavia, LoveFilm offers streaming films and movies delivered right to the doors of subscribers. They have over 67,000 titles to choose from, and it’s estimated that over four million films are rented each month by their over one-million members. In business since 2002, their largest shareholder is Amazon. If you like in Europe, this is the best option available for renting movies online.
• Adult DVDEmpire – What if you want to rent DVDs online but are looking for something of a more adult nature? That’s where Adult DVDEmpire comes in, as they offer over 83,000 adult DVDs and Blu-ray movies featuring all the hottest porn stars. Over 35,000 films are available through video on demand, allowing you to stream the films on your computer, and there‘s no monthly fee to bother with (you pay per minute). • Barry Munday (2010) – Patrick Wilson stars as Barry Munday, a man who wakes up from an attack only to realize that he’s now missing his testicles. To make matters worse, a woman he doesn’t remember having sex with (Judy Greer) has filed a paternity suit against him. Hilarity ensues as Barry tries to man up and do the right thing. A bizarre comedy co-starring Chloe Sevigny, Malcolm McDowell, Cybill Shepherd, and Billy Dee Williams.
• The Expendables (2010) – Sylvester Stallone directs and stars in the film about a band of mercenaries taking on one of their toughest assignments ever. Co-starring Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, Steve Austin, Eric Roberts, and Randy Couture. A great flick for fans of action movies from the ‘80s and ‘90s.

• The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2010) – Gemma Arterton stars in this British thriller about a kidnapped woman who slowly turns the tables on her captors. One of the most intelligent new movies on DVD I’ve seen all year, it features numerous twists and turns on the way to its surprising conclusion.
• Vampires Suck (2010) – This parody of the Twilight movies only has a 4% freshness rating at Rotten Tomatoes, and I’ll admit that sitting through it was a painful experience. Of course, I’m not a 14-year-old girl, so there’s a distinct possibility that I’m barking up the wrong demographic. If you want plenty of jokes about Jacob Black’s body hair and Edward Cullen’s propensity to brood–not to mention that funny Asian guy from The Hangover (Ken Jeong)–then by all means give this one a try. Everyone else will agree that it’s the worst of the new movies on DVD.
• The Winning Season (2009) – An overlooked sports comedy starring Sam Rockwell as a dad trying to connect with his teen daughter who lands a job coaching her high school basketball team. The teens include Emma Roberts, Rooney Mara, Emily Rios, and Shareeka Epps. Rob Corddry co-stars as the high school principal.

• Flipped (2010) – Ron Reiner directs this sweet tale of two kids who explore their affections for one another from second grade to junior high school. Co-starring Rebecca De Mornay, Anthony Edwards, John Mahoney, Aidan Quinn, and Penelope Ann Miller. Based on the novel by Wendelin Van Draanen.
• Cairo Time (2009) – A hypnotic romance between a magazine editor from Canada (Patricia Clarkson) and the Egyptian pal (Alexander Siddig) of her husband. One of the new movies on DVD aimed at a grown-up audience, Cairo Time plays out against the beautiful backdrop of the land of the pharaohs.
• Countdown to Zero (2010) – A sobering documentary about the increasing threat of nuclear weapons. Features interviews with Jimmy Carter, Tony Blair, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Robert McNamara. Narrated by Gary Oldman.

• Eat Pray Love (2010) – Julia Roberts stars as a divorcee who journeys around the globe on a journey of self-discovery. A beautifully filmed travelogue co-starring Javier Bardem, Billy Crudup, Richard Jenkins, and James Franco. Based on the memoir by author Elizabeth Gilbert.
• Patrik, Age 1.5 (2008) – Goran (Gustaf Skarsgard) and Sven (Torkel Petersson) are a married gay couple living in the suburbs of Sweden. Deciding to take their relationship to the next level, they set out to adopt a child, but a clerical error causes them to wind up with a kid who’s 15 instead of 1.5. To complicate matters and drive this hilarious foreign comedy, new son Patrik (Tom Ljungman) is a homophobic juvenile delinquent.
• The Extra Man – Based on the novel of the same name, The Extra Man stars Kevin Kline as a playwright who makes ends meet by accompanying wealthy old ladies to social functions. He strikes up a friendship with an aspiring, cross-dressing writer (Paul Dano) who sublets a room in his apartment. Co-starring Katie Holmes and John C. Reilly.

• Robo Geisha (2009) – From Noboru Iguchi, director of The Machine Girl, comes this Japanese film about two geisha sisters who are abducted by a ruthless steel manufacturer and turned into cyborg assassins. Swords eject from female buttocks, a giant robot threatens to drop a bomb on Mt. Fuji, and there’s also plenty of gore to satisfy fans of odd films.
• Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010) – Taking place 23 years after the original film, this Oliver Stone sequel follows Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) as he’s released from prison, writes a best-selling book, and tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. Meanwhile, Gordon’s future son-in-law (Shia LaBeouf) seeks financial revenge against the greedy Wall Street powerhouse (Josh Brolin) partially responsible for the death of his mentor. Keep your eyes peeled for a cameo by Charlie Sheen, the co-star of the original film.
• The Kids Are All Right – Lisa Cholodenko directs this critically-acclaimed comedy/drama about a lesbian couple (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) who both give birth to children using an anonymous sperm donor. Years later, their teenage kids want to meet their real father, and that’s when Paul (Mark Ruffalo) enters the picture and threatens to upset their happy family. A big hit at the Sundance Film Festival.

That’s our look at some of the latest DVDs available for your home theater system. Most are these new movies on DVD are also available on Blu-ray disc, and you should be able to find them all at Netflix. In this article, I’ll be examining some of my favorite Korean DVDs, with a focus on the films released after the nation’s cinematic resurgence beginning in the late ‘90s. For those of you who would like to experience a different kind of filmmaking, I urge you to head on over to Netflix and sign up immediately. They carry all the films listed below, as well as a wide range of other unpredictable Asian motion pictures.

• Memories of Murder (2003) – Bong Joon-ho (The Host, Mother) directed this critically-acclaimed tale of the first real-life serial murderer to be active in South Korea. Kim Sang-kyung and Song Kang-ho play the police detectives who often use brutal methods to try and catch the killer, but the list of raped and murdered women keeps getting longer and longer. A success at numerous film festivals around the world, Memories of Murder would capture awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (Song Kang-ho). If you’re experiencing the films of South Korea for the first time, don’t expect the usual Hollywood happy ending.

• The President’s Last Bang (2005) – One of the most controversial Korean movies ever made, The President’s Last Bang details the assassination of real-life President Park Chung-hee (Song Jae-ho) by Kim Jae-kyu (Baek Yoon-sik), his friend and director of the Korean Intelligence Agency. Played as a black comedy, many South Koreans didn’t appreciate the depiction of their beloved President Park (credited with South Korea’s current economic prosperity) as a hedonist with an obsession for Japanese culture. But that shouldn’t matter to American audiences, as I’m willing to bet that 99.9% (myself included) couldn’t name one actual South Korean leader. Subversive and hilarious, it’s the kind of film that Oliver Stone would make if he were Korean.

• The Good, the Bad, & the Weird (2008) -Inspired by the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone (especially The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly), this bizarre motion picture is set in Manchuria during the 1930s. A treasure map is up for grabs, and it’s being pursued by a hired killer (Lee Byung-hun as The Bad), a bounty hunter (Jung Woo-sung as The Good), a pistol-packing thief (Song Kang-ho as The Weird), and the Imperial Japanese Army. Chases sequences and shoot-outs abound, especially a lengthy scene near the climax where plenty of dynamite is employed. If you’re looking for a film that falls into the weird Western category, give this Korean DVD a try.
• Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War (2004) – Following the success of Shiri, director Kang Je-gyu turned out this epic tale of two brothers trying to survive the brutal events of the Korean War. From the elder brother’s attempts to win South Korea’s highest honor and have his younger sibling sent back home, to the graphic depictions of life under communist rule, this war movie pulls no punches. Hailed by critics around the globe, it broke box-office records in South Korea and remains a favorite on the DVD market.

• Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) – Park Chan-wook kicks off his Vengeance Trilogy with this powerhouse tale of Ryu, a deaf-mute factory worker (Shin Ha-kyun) trying to raise enough money for a kidney transplant for his ailing sister. Driven to the point of desperation and having already been robbed of money and a kidney by the black market, he and his terrorist girlfriend (Bae Doona) decide to kidnap the young daughter of a wealthy executive (the ubiquitous Song Kang-ho) and hold her for ransom. A fascinating tale filled with characters who are forced to follows courses of action they would otherwise find abhorrent.
• Oldboy (2003) – Based on the manga of the same name, Oldboy won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and has been named one of the best Asian movies ever made by a CNN poll. Oh Dae-Su (the wonderful Choi Min-sik) is a drunken businessman who finds himself abducted, locked in a hotel room for 15 years, then suddenly released back into the world and tasked with learning the identity of his captor. Live squid are devoured, grown men have their teeth pulled with a hammer, and there are plenty of other moments sure to have audiences squirming in their seats. But that’s what makes it so great, and, in my opinion, the best installment of Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy. Of all the South Korean movies I’ve ever seen, this one remains my favorite.

• Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005) – Sent to prison for a murder she didn’t commit, Lee Geum-ja (Lee Young Ae) is released back into society and promptly sets about pursuing vengeance on the man responsible (Choi Min-sik). Her kind-hearted and sometimes lethal behavior in prison is shown through flashbacks, and her later actions include opening a bakery, wearing red eyeshadow, and gathering together a group of similarly vengeance-minded individuals. A brutal revenge flick with a decidedly Asian bent, and the satisfying conclusion to director Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy.
• The Way Home (2002) – A tribute to grandmothers everywhere, The Way Home is a touching film about a young boy (Yu Seung-ho) from Seoul who goes to live temporarily with his mute grandmother (Kim Eul-boon) in a rural village. The boy is cruel at first, calling his grandmother “retard” and breaking her possessions. But as time goes by, he comes to realize how hard she works and how much she loves him. Winner of the Grand Bell Award (the South Korean equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Picture and Best Screenplay. Even non-Asians may find themselves choking back tears.

• Thirst (2009) – Another film from director Park Chan-wook, this time starring (who else) Song Kang-ho as a Catholic priest who becomes a vampire due to a blood transfusion. But things get even more precarious when he falls for the unhappy wife (Kim Ok-bin) of a childhood friend. With a mixture of horror, black comedy, and plenty of gore, it’s definitely a different take on modern-day vampire movies. Kim and Song are especially effective as the star-crossed lovers, and director Park once again demonstrates why he’s one of the most inventive filmmakers working today.
• Marathon (2005) – A feel-good Korean movie about a young autistic man (Jo Seung-woo) with a passion for running, the dedicated mother (Kim Mi-suk) who stands by him, and the alcoholic former marathon champ (Lee Gi-yeong) who helps him train. Winner of the 2005 Grand Bell Award for Best Picture.

While that concludes our look at Korean DVDs, keep in mind that Asia is just brimming with quality motion pictures. • 8. Ponyo - A celebrated Japanese animated movie about a goldfish who befriends a human boy and wishes to become a little girl. A great film that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
• 7. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – Based on the Swedish crime novel by Stieg Larsson, this is the first film in a trilogy that follows a dedicated journalist (Michael Nyqvist) and a quirky hacker (Noomi Rapace) as they expose serial killers, KGB agents, and various other wrongdoers.
• 6. The Men Who Stare at Goats – Ewan McGregor is Bob Wilton, a journalist looking for a scoop. He finds it in Lyn Cassidy (George Clooney), a former military psychic who claims to be able to kill with his mind. A bizarre comedy co-starring Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey.
• 5. Fantastic Mr. Fox – Employing stop-motion animation, this film tells the story of a fox and his family as they attempt to scavenge for food, get along with one another, and survive the efforts of local farmers to eradicate them. Featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, and Bill Murray.
• 4. An Education – Carey Mulligan received an Oscar nomination for her role as Jenny Mellor, a teenage girl in 60’s London who comes of age thanks to her relationship with an older man (Peter Sarsgaard).
• 3. Kick-Ass – Based on a comic book, Kick-Ass tells the tale of a nerdy high school student who decides to become a superhero. But there’s only one catch: he has no powers or unique fighting abilities. Co-starring Nicolas Cage and Mark Strong.
• 2. Where the Wild Things Are – Director Spike Jonze brings the beloved children’s book to the big screen. The film ended up on a number of critic’s top 10 lists for 2009.
• 1. A Serious Man – The latest black comedy from Joel and Ethan Coen, this time about a regular guy (Michael Stuhlbarg) who suffers though various dilemmas like a modern-day version of Job. Nominated for two Oscars, including Best Picture.

Blockbuster Top Ten Movie Rentals

Blockbuster used to be the nation’s undisputed king of video rentals, but they’ve slowly taken a backseat to Netflix over the last few years. While no longer on top, they still offer over 90,000 DVDs for online rental and home delivery.

• 10. How to Train Your Dragon – In this animated tale, a young Viking aspiring to be a dragon slayer meets and befriends a member of the fire-breathing species. Featuring the voice talents of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, and Jonah Hill.
• 9. Sex and the City 2 – The girls from Manhattan are back, this time heading off to Abu Dhabi to enjoy some fun in the sun. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon.
• 8. The Karate Kid – A remake of the 80’s classic, this time set in China and starring Jaden Smith as the bullied youth and Jackie Chan as his wise martial arts instructor.
• 7. Predators – The latest film in the Predator franchise finds a group of human soldiers abducted by aliens and placed on a game preserve in outer space to be hunted down. Adrien Brody stars.
• 6. Winter’s Bone – A celebrated indie film about an Ozark teen (Jennifer Lawrence) in search of her meth-cooking father. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
• 5. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World – Based on the indie comic, Scott Pilgrim stars Michael Cera as a twenty-something who falls for a girl (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) but must defeat her seven evil exes before they can be together. Directed by Edgar Wright and co-starring Chris Evans, Kieran Culkin, Brandon Routh, and Jason Schwartzman. An entertaining assault on the senses.
• 4. Charlie St. Cloud – Zac Efron stars in this tearjerker about a young man torn between a beautiful sailor (Amanda Crew) and the spirit of his baseball-loving brother. Co-starring Kim Basinger and Ray Liotta.
• 3. Ramona and Beezus – Based on the novel by Beverly Cleary, this film stars Joey King as a rambunctious third-grader named Ramona and Selena Gomez and her older sister Beezus. Ramona drives everyone crazy with her antics, but she’s more than capable of saving the day when problems arise.
• 2. Toy Story 3 – When their owner heads off to college, lovable toys such as Sheriff Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) end up at a daycare run by a tyrannical bear (Ned Beatty). Another monster hit for Pixar, and the first animated film to make over $1 billion at the worldwide box-office.
• 1. Grown Ups – When their junior high school basketball coach dies, a group of childhood friends (Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider) reunite at his funeral. Hilarity follows.

In case you’re unaware, Redbox is the movie rental service that offers kiosks inside businesses like McDonalds and Wal-Mart. As of this writing, here are their top 10 movie rentals:

• 6. Jonah Hex – Josh Brolin is Jonah Hex, a former Confederate soldier who now makes ends meet as a lethal bounty hunter with a supernatural power or two. When the man who killed his family (John Malkovich) turns up alive and well, Hex vows to put him in the ground for good. Based on the weird Western comic book, the film also stars Megan Fox as a deadly prostitute.
• 5. Disney’s A Christmas Carol (2009) – Jim Carrey stars in multiple roles for this Disney adaptation of the popular holiday tale from Charles Dickens. Directed by Robert Zemeckis.

• Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) – The first of three films to pair Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, Joe Versus the Volcano focuses on a man who believes he only has months left to live. Vowing to experience everything life has to offer, he plans to jump into an island volcano when his time is up.
• Practical Magic (1998) – Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock play sisters who carry on a traditional of witchcraft within their family. But they’re both cursed, and any man they fall in love with is doomed to die an early death. But it’s still a comedy, so things aren’t as bleak as they sound.
• You’ve Got Mail (1998) – Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan team up once again in this smash hit romantic comedy. As the duo begin an anonymous online relationship, they have no idea that they know each other in real life (and don’t really get along).
