In 1951, Redenbacher and a partner purchased the George F. Chester and Son seed corn plant in Valparaiso, Indiana, and started experimenting with hybrid strains of popcorn. After numerous failures, they finally found the perfect blend and started marketing it as RedBow. But thanks to an advertising agency, they soon switched to the name Orville Redenbacher to cash in on the folksy charm of its creator.
Their gourmet popcorn debuted in 1970, and they had captured a third of the market by the middle of the decade. Hunt-Wesson purchased the company in 1976, and it later become the property of ConAgra in 1990. But no matter who owned the company, Redenbacher kept right on promoting it. With his geeky-yet-cheery looks, distinctive red bowtie, and small-town delivery, he charmed Americans by the millions. Years later, his grandson Gary would also get in on the act, and the Redenbacher boys continued to drive profits through the roof. Even after his death in 1995, Orville Redenbacher appeared in a commercial thanks to the miracles of modern technology.
