its nice to have a list of “popular american hollywood war movie” but your forgot lots of more artistical and not american movies which are certainly more poignant from a cinematic point of view…
just some random examples first who come to my mind:
hiroshima mon amour
the battle of algeri
days of 36
la grande guerra
bronte
fires on the plain
the burmese harp
roma citta aperta
canal
L’armée des ombres

etc etc etc

guys there is also the lost battalion, attack force Z, guns of navarone, where eagles dare. kelly’s heroes, bridge over the river kwai, halls of montezuma, wake island, midway, they were expendable, pork chop hill{korean war} ect…

You could add “Cold Mountain” to the Civil War list. No it’s not a battle all the way through but you can’t deny that the beginning battle is pretty epic.

It’s also anti-war. It wasn’t great, and could have been more interesting without all the love stuff. But it was at least an average movie.
