The Starz network has announced the principal cast for their upcoming 10-part epic, Camelot, and fans of the Arthurian legend should be thrilled. This is not, however, a remake of the 1967 musical. In fact, the legend is being taken in a whole new direction in an effort to connect with a generation of viewers unfamiliar with previous adaptations. It’s just the latest phase in the revitalization of Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, as several feature films about the subject are currently in development. For more, check out our Casting Couch article on the subject.

Here are the four actors and actresses announced as the leads in the 10-episode series set to debut in early 2011 on Starz (U.S.), CBS (Canada), and GK-TV (everywhere else):

Joseph Fiennes as Merlin – TV fans may recall Fiennes from his recent stint on the series Flash Forward, but his two biggest role came in Elizabeth and Shakespeare in Love. Other films include Luther and Enemy at the Gates. And, yes, he’s the younger brother of Ralph Fiennes.

Eva Green as Morgana – The French actress and model gained international attention with her role as Vesper Lynd in the James Bond film Casino Royale. But she was already turning heads before that, getting all kinds of naked in her film debut, The Dreamers. Other notable appearance include Kingdom of Heaven and The Golden Compass. This will be her first role on television.

Jamie Campbell Bower as Arthur – The 21-year-old British actor (who looks about 14) can be seen as Anthony Hope in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and as Caius Volturi in Twilight: New Moon. He’ll also play Gellert Grindelwald in the final two installments of the Harry Potter franchise.

Tamsin Egerton as Guinevere – This rising young English actress has starred in such films as Keeping Mum, St. Trinian’s, and St. Trinian’s II: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold. She also has experience with the Arthurian legends, having played a young Morgaine in the mini-series The Mists of Avalon.

Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht sounds optimistic about the whole affair, noting, “With Joseph Fiennes, Eva Green, Jamie Campbell Bower and Tamsin Egerton in the cast, we’ve got actors who can bring real passion and intensity to their roles.”

But the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Be sure to tune in sometime in 2011 to watch the 10-episode Camelot. When a more concrete date is announced, we’ll be sure to let you know.
