Saw VII, Dark Shadows, and More – Movie News

There’s plenty of movie news to be had this week, due in large part to the annual Comic-Con going on in San Diego. It’s become a monster event over the last 39 years, and loads of trailers, posters, and info are released to the public. I might’ve missed a few things, but I’m confident that this is about as thorough a movie news round-up as you’re going to find. Enjoy.

Avatar Sneak Peek – On August 21st, Imax and 3D screens across the planet will be debuting 15 minutes worth of promotional footage from James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi movie, Avatar. Everyone agrees that this is going to be a groundbreaking film, so get your ass in gear and don’t miss this event.

$75 Zombie Movie – Wanna see what a $75 zombie movie looks like? If you live in the UK, you’ll be able to around Halloween. That’s because Colin, a $75 zombie film made by Marc Price, has been picked up by Kaleidoscope Entertainment after being screened in Cannes. Look for it later in the U.S. on DVD. I’m betting it’s better than Land of the Dead.

First Korean 3D Horror - Korea (south, not north) is gearing up to make their first 3D horror film. Directed by Kim Ji-hwan, the film will be titled Soul Mate and concern a group of good-looking college guys getting bumped off by a mysterious killer. The film is expected to be released in the summer of 2010. Once again, expect a U.S. DVD release at a later date.

Cold Souls – When it hits theaters, don’t miss the indie film Cold Souls. Paul Giamatti stars as himself, and he undergoes a high-tech procedure to remove his soul. Seems things are easier without a soul, but Paul regrets his actions when the ‘ol Giamatti soul gets sold on the black market in Russia. From there, he’s on a quest to retrieve his soul. I’m betting that Yakov Smirnoff bought it.

First Look Freddy – While you can’t see much, the first picture of Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger has been released. You can see it here. It has also been announced that the new Nightmare on Elm Street will be released on April 30th, 2010.

Dark Shadows – The next project for Tim Burton will be a big-screen remake of the old horror soap opera Dark Shadows (starring Jonathan Frid as the vampire Barnabas Collins). The show ran for over 1,220 episodes and still has a cult following to this day. Needless to say, Burton was a fan of the show growing up. Johnny Depp will star, this adding another oddity to his acting resume.

Saw VII – Will it ever stop? Saw VI is coming in October of 2009, and the latest is that Saw VII has already gotten the green light. David Hackl, director of Saw V, will return to the helm. At this point, I’m just curious to see when this franchise will run out of steam.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 – According to Oren Aviv, the head of production for Disney, Pirates of the Caribbean 4 will begin shooting in April or May of 2010, and a release date is planned for sometime in 2011. I can only pray that the monkey makes a return.

Pepper Potts Pictures – If you click on this link, you’ll see the first pictures of Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts from Iron Man 2. Yum.

A 300 SequelFrank Miller, fresh off the awful Spirit movie, is working on a sequel to his graphic novel 300. If things go well, they’re going to turn it into a movie. I have no idea what it’ll be about exactly, especially considering the end of the first film. Oh well, common sense has never stopped Frank Miller before. After all, he’s the goddamn Batman.

No More Irish Films? – We all love Irish films (especially those involving soap and leprechauns), but they may not be around for much longer. The country’s finance department recently recommended cutting $52.6 million in funding to arts and culture, and this could serve as a death blow for the film industry. If that happened, Ireland would become the only country in the developed world without a film industry. I guess there’s always alcoholism.

Drawn Together - The Comedy Central animated show Drawn Together will have a movie set for a straight-to-DVD release in 2010. If you’ve never seen it, think of a classless reality show (is there any other kind) featuring cartoon characters.

Wiseman to Direct ShrapnelLen Wiseman will direct Shrapnel, which is based on a graphic novel. Humans have colonized the solar system, and the Solar Alliance has been formed to govern them. The residents of Venus don’t like this very much, and they get assistance in resisting from a former Marine in self-imposed exile.

Crazy HeartJeff Bridges plays an aging country singer in Crazy Heart, which is expected to be released in the spring of 2010. Robert Duvall will also star, which is appropriate considering his turn as an aging country star in Tender Mercies. Maggie Gyllenhall will also star, and let’s hope she looks better than she did in The Dark Knight (click here to see her at her best).

Killer Nuns?Magdalena, a comic book about a badass fighting nun, has drawn director Ryuhei Kitamura (Midnight Meat Train) and writer Holly Brix (The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations). Luke Goss (Hellboy II) and Jenna Dewan (Step Up) are supposed to star. I’m sure this will go over great with the Pope.

The Losers from DC ComicsThe Losers, an action-adventure drama starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans, begins principal photography this week in Puerto Rico. No word if Felix Trinidad will play a loser, since he already is one.

Nic Cage in The Green Hornet – According to Variety, Nicolas Cage is in negotiations to play the villain in the Green Hornet movie (opposite Seth Rogen). Let’s hope he’s as over-the-top as he was in the Grind House fake trailer.

The Hangover Breaks a RecordThe Hangover has officially become the highest-grossing R-rated comedy ever made. The prior record-holder was Beverly Hills Cop, back when Eddie Murphy didn’t make films aimed at 8-year-olds.

A Master and Commander Sequel? – Early talks are underway for a possible sequel to Master and Commander, the nautical adventure film starring Russell Crowe. It’s hardly a sure thing at this point, but let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Twilight Zone: The Movie…Again – Screenwriter Rand Ravich has been hired to write a script for another Twilight Zone movie. If this ever gets off the ground, it’ll be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Voltron: The Movie – Thanks to the success of Transformers and Transformers 2, it looks like Voltron may finally be making its way to the big screen. Atlas Entertainment has acquired the rights to turn the popular 80’s cartoon in a movie. Let’s hope it’s better than the Transformers’ movies, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Megan Fox in there somewhere.
