Welcome to the inaugural post for the OnlyGoodMovies blog. Here, I’ll be discussing the latest movie news, movie reviews and anything else which comes to mind. Hopefully, these daily entries will provide you with a source of both entertainment and amusement.
As you may or may not know, new DVDs always go on sale on Tuesdays. For this reason, our weekly Tuesday blog articles will revolve around the latest DVD releases and their suitability for different members of the family.
Australia (Blu-ray and DVD) – Directed in 2008 by Baz Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, Australia takes place “down under” between the years of 1939 and 1942. If you couldn’t get enough of Far and Away, then this film’s for you.
Beverly Hill Chihuahua (DVD and Blu-ray) – This 2008 Disney comedy was a big hit at the box office. It’s about a female Chihuahua who gets abducted in Mexico and must escape the clutches of the evil Doberman, El Diablo. Along the way, she’ll get assistance from pals such as Delgado, a German Shepherd, and Papi, a male Chihuahua with a crush on her. Features the voice of Drew Barrymore.
An Empress & The Warriors (Blu-ray only) – Set many years before the unification of China, this movie revolves around Yen Feier (Kelly Chen), a young woman who must take the throne following the death of her father in battle. With help from her loyal servant Muyong Xuehu (Donnie Yen), she must defend the kingdom from the likes of her ambitious cousin, Wu Ba. Lots of fighting and wire work make this one a real treat.
Johnny Handsome – Filmed in 1989, the crime-drama known as Johnny Handsome was directed by Walter Hill and starred Mickey Rourke, Morgan Freeman and Ellen Barkin. Deformed since birth, a career criminal is given a new face before receiving his parole. As he leaves the prison for the first time in years, everyone wonders if he’s truly reformed or just faking, especially the criminal who sent him to prison and killed his father-figure. With Rourke’s recent Oscar nomination, Johnny Handsome is finally getting a long-awaited DVD release.
Silence of the Lambs (Blu-ray) – Everyone knows the story by now – fava beans, blah, blah, blah. For the first time, catch Dr. Lecter, Buffalo Bill and Clarice Starling all on glorious Blu-ray. Winner of the top five Oscars that year, the film stars Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster, Ted Levine and Scott Glenn.
Stargate: The Ark of Truth/Stargate: Continuum – This release contains two Stargate movies for the price of one. The first, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, concludes the Ori story arc and picks up after the SG-1 series finals (but prior to the 4th season of Stargate Atlantis). Stargate: Continuum acts as a sequel to SG-1, and it also feature MacGyver (aka Richard Dean Anderson) and the season 10 cast of SG-1.
Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic – The entire Watchmen graphic novel is given voice, sound and limited animation, but all the artwork is straight from the source. Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons oversaw the project, and the result is an epic story which clocks in at over 5 hours. Why someone wouldn’t just read the graphic novel is beyond me.
Wonder Woman – This animated film is the 4th release from DC Universe Original Animated Movies. Written by Gail Simone and Michael Jelenic, audiences will get a look at the origins of Wonder Woman and how she came to live among the mortals. Voices are provided by Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Alfred Molina, Rosario Dawson, Virginia Madsen and many more.
