DVD and Blu-Ray New Releases for 8/18/09

As you’re probably well aware, each Tueday sees the latest DVD and Blu-ray releases hit the market. This week is no exception, and I’ve filtered through the many options to present our readers with the best choices in home entertainment. If (and when) you see any of the DVD and Blu-ray releases below, be sure and drop us a line in the comments section.

L: Change the WorLd – Considered both a sequel and spin-off of the Death Note series, this live action film follows the adventures of a guy who perches on furniture like a bird and eats enough sweets to rot out every tooth in his head. With only 23 days left to live (see Death Note for more), the brilliant investigator known as L tries to stop a group of bio-terrorists from wiping out the majority of the human race.

Dexter: The Complete Third Season – In this popular Showtime series, Dexter is a serial killer who preys on other serial killers. Oh, and he also happens to work for the police as a blood splatter expert.

Eli Stone: The Complete Second SeasonJohnny Lee Miller starred in this ABC series about an attorney who learns that he has an inoperable brain aneurysm. This causes him to have hallucinations, although he soon comes to believe that the visons are provided by a divine source. If you’re a fan of Natasha Henstridge, be sure to catch this series (she plays Stone’s ex-fiancee).

Everybody Hates Chris: The Complete Fourth Season – The final season of a show based on the childhood experiences of comic Chris Rock.

JuliaTilda Swinton plays an out-of-work alcoholic who gets involved in a kidnapping scheme.

Gossip Girl: The Complete Second Season – Ever wonder what life is like for rich teens attending private school in New York? Well, you can find out everything you need to know by watching this series. Starring Blake Lively and Leighton Meester.

Gunslinger Girl 2: Il Teatrino – The sequel to the animated Japanese series about young girls rescued from the brink of death by the Italian government and turned into cybernetic killing machines. If you wanna see little girls wielding big guns, this is the anime for you.

Hannah Montana: The Movie (also on Blu-ray) – After starting to lose focus on what really matters, Hannah/Miley is forced to return to her family’s farm and get in touch with her roots. Plenty of musical numbers in this one. Click on this link to read my review of the film.

Tyson (Blu-ray) – The unflinching documentary takes a look at the life of the former heavyweight boxing champ. Tyson participates in the process, providing unique insight into his troubled past.

Surveillance (also on Blu-ray) – Following a series of murders and a woman’s disappearance, two FBI agents (Julia Ormond and Bill Pullman) arrive to unravel the mystery. This one’s got some major twists, so be sure and watch it when you’re wide awake.

Sons of Anarchy: Season One – From the creator of The Shield comes this tale of an outlaw biker gang and their clashes with rival clubs, cops, and one another.

The Simpsons: The Complete Twelfth Season – The venerable animated FOX series just keeps going and going.

Shinjuku Incident (also on Blu-ray) – Jackie Chan stars in this drama about a Chinese mechanic who illegally enters Japan in order to search for his fiancee. Since it’s Japan, you can bet the Yakuza are somehow involved, but don’t expect the same level of action as previous Jackie Chan movies. This is primarily a drama.

The Last House on the Left (also on Blu-ray) – A couple of young girls are murdered by a gang of thugs. But when the killers seek refuge in the home of one of the girls, her parents plan a very bloody revenge. A remake of Wes Craven’s first film.

Kagemusha (Blu-ray) – Released as part of the Criterion Collection. Akira Kurosawa directed this film about a lowly criminal who must impersonate a dying warlord in order to prevent the destruction of the clan. 5000 extras were used for the final battle scene.
