It’s kind of a lackluster week for DVD releases, but that won’t stop me from posting what’s on tap as of 4/14/09. Things should pick up next week, however, as movies such as The Wrestler and Frost/Nixon debut, and Sin City and the X-Men trilogy come to Blu-Ray.
The Spirit – A financial and critical disaster, The Spirit is directed by Frank Miller and adapted from the works of Will Eisner. After a cop is murdered, he returns from the dead as the masked crimefighter known as The Spirit. Samuel L. Jackson plays an over-the-top villain named The Octopus, and beautiful women abound (including Eva Mendes, Paz Vega, Sarah Paulson and Scarlett Johansson).
American Swing – A documentary about Plato’s Retreat, a legendary sex club catering to heterosexual couples in 70’s New York. I’m betting the hairstyles are the stars of the show.
The Reader – As a teenager, Michael Berg (played as an adult by Ralph Fiennes) had a passionate affair with an older woman (Kate Winslet) named Hanna Schmitz. Years later, Michael leans that Hanna is on trial for war crimes during World War II. Based on a best-selling book and nominated for several Oscars.
Splinter – A couple are kidnapped by an escaped convict and his apprentice, but that’s the least of their problems. They soon run afoul of a deadly parasite at an isolated gas station, and the fight for survival is on.
Slaughter High – Originally released in 1986, this slasher film follows the prank-gone-wrong storyline. After pulling the prank on a fellow student in high school, eight friends are invited to a reunion years later. Before long, they start getting dispatched in the most brutal of ways. Also known as The Last Laugh.
Lost in Austen – A modern-day girl finds herself in the 19th-century world of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (having switched places with Elizabeth Bennet). While she helps the characters find love, she must also be careful not to change the course of events from the story–which is made very difficult by her attraction to Mr. Darcy. Originally a series from the BBC.
For those of you who’ve made the switch the Blu-Ray, here are the latest films to be released in that format:
Mutant Chronicles – In the year 2707, a device buried beneath the Earth is uncovered. Unfortunately, the device changes people into bloodthirsty mutants, and the planet is soon in danger of being overrun. In a last ditch effort to stop the mutant menace, a group is assembled to journey deep into the heart of the sinister device. Stars Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki, Sean Pertwee and John Malkovich.
Thirteenth Floor – Starring Armin Mueller-Stahl, Gretchen Mol, Vincent D’Onofrio and Dennis Haysbert. The inventor of a virtual reality simulator is murdered, and his protégé is considered the prime suspect. Filled with twists and turns, you be guessing as to what’s real–and what’s simulated–all the way until the film’s final frames.
Universal Soldier: The Return – The last Jean-Claude Van Damme film to have a wide-release in the United States (way back in 1999), the film also stars Michael Jai White and Bill Goldberg. This time around, the Universal Soldiers are connected by an artificial intelligence program named SETH. When SETH gets wind that his funding has been cut and he’ll be shut down, he goes on a killing spree with the help of his army of genetically-enhanced soldiers. As you might have guessed, it’s up to JCVD to save the day.
