New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases for 4/7/09

It’s Tuesday, April 7th, which means it’s time for another batch of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs to hit the shelves. Below, I’ll be running down all the major releases of the week, plus I’ll also be throwing in a few lesser-known titles as well. If you’re a Netflix customer, be sure to move these to the top of your queue.

1612 – Commissioned by the Kremlin and regarded by many to be a piece of propaganda, 1612 is an epic Russian film set during the infamous Time of Troubles. A young servant boy gets into a series of adventures while trying to save a Russian princess. And keep an eye out for the unicorns (I had no idea unicorns actually existed in Russia).
House – Seven people are trapped in an Alabama inn by a madman who claims to have murdered God. If they haven’t killed one of their number by dawn, their captor promises to slaughter them all. Stars Michael Madsen and Bill Moseley. Not to be confused with the William Katt film from the ‘80s.
Donkey Punch – Three women meet four men in Spain and accompany them to their yacht. This leads to drugs, sex, and someone dying as a result of the infamous “donkey punch” sexual maneuver (look it up if you don’t already know). I’m hoping this will lead to a movie called either “Chewbacca” or “Houdini.”
The Day the Earth Stood Still – Keanu Reeves acts emotionless (what’s new?) as an alien being sent to save mankind from itself. Also starring mega-babe Jennifer Connelly.
Shuttle – A group of travelers are kidnapped by an airport shuttle driver who makes some extra bucks by nabbing people for a human trafficking ring.
Bedtime Stories – Adam Sandler stars in this family film where bedtime stories can come true. Also featuring Keri Russell, Guy Pearce, Lucy Lawless and Russell Brand.
Yes Man – Jim Carrey attends a self-help seminar and agrees to say yes to every opportunity presented to him. As you might imagine, his life immediately begins to change (with often hilarious results).
Doubt – When a priest is suspected of having improper relations with one of his altar boys, a nun sets out to bring him down. Stars Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis (all nominated for Oscars for their respective roles).
The Tale of Despereaux – A heroic mouse undertakes a quest to save a human princess. Featuring the voices of Matthew Broderick, Emma Watson, Dustin Hoffman, and many more.
Not Easily Broken – A married couple have their wedding vows put to the test. Directed by Bill Duke, the film stars Morris Chestnut and Taraji P. Henson. Panned by the critics, but it was directed by one of the stars of Predator, so it can’t be all bad.
