Hundreds of DVD and Blu-ray releases come out each week, but who wants to sift through a bunch of crap to find a few gems? That’s why we at OnlyGoodMovies have labored long and hard to bring you only the best weekly recommendations for DVD and Blu-ray viewing. For the week of 8/4/09, here’s what looks the most promising:
The Soloist – Robert Downey, Jr. and Jamie Foxx star in this movie based on the true story of Nathanial Ayers (Fox), a brilliant musician who develops schizophrenia and becomes homeless. Downey, Jr. is the reporter who finds him and tells his story.
Obsessed – Ali Larter (bad girl) and Beyonce Knowles (good girl) fight over a man. The biggest draw of this film is the insane catfight which takes place near the end of the film. Suddenly, I’m reminded of Linda Evans and Joan Collins falling into a swimming pool on Dynasty.

Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan – Jason Voorhees is back once again, and this time he’s aboard a ship headed in the direction of Manhattan. As you may have surmised, the ship’s filled with high school kids. Oh, Jason is really gonna have fun in this one. We also solve the age-old question of what happens when Jason is exposed to toxic waste.
The Mysteries of Pittsburgh – A coming-of-age tale set in 1980′s Pittsburgh. Starring Jon Foster, Sienna Miller, Nick Nolte, Mena Suvari, and Peter Sarsgaard.
Race to Witch Mountain – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Carla Gugino team up to get a pair of alien kids to the safety of Witch Mountain. A remake of the Disney classic.
The Mutant Chronicles – With the Earth on the verge of being overrun by hideous mutants, a small group of heroes are dispatched to try and fulfill an ancient prophecy. Starring Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki and John Malkovich. For our review of the movie, click right here.
Labor Pains – Lindsay Lohan is about to lose her job, but she blurts out that she’s pregnant and remains employed. But as the supposed “due date” gets closer and closer, she must resort to increasingly hilarious means to keep her secret. By the way, a good technique for avoiding real-life pregnancy is to date homely DJs of the same gender.
Fragments – After a senseless shooting spree leaves many dead, friends and family try to come to grips. Great cast, but this one went straight-to-DVD. Stars Kate Beckinsale , Dakota Fanning, Josh Hutcherson, Guy Pearce, Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Hudson, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Embeth Davidtz.
