Another Friday is almost upon us, so let’s pause for a moment and review the new movie releases to be aware of for August 7th, 2009. I’ve included a trailer for each and a brief description, so don’t come crying to me if you sit through a stinker this weekend. By the way, be sure to check our main site, OnlyGoodMovies.com, for reviews of all the following films.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Featuring a cast filled with named actors and a nearly two hour run time, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra will either be an intense thrill-ride or an immense waste of time. After watching the trailer, I’m betting on the latter (although Sienna Miller does look mighty fine in her big glasses and skintight leather). I’m also looking forward to Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander, even though he doesn’t appear in the trailer. What I’m not looking forward to is those suits of armor thrown in to blatantly cash in on the success of Iron Man. That’s just lame.
Julie & Julia
A woman stuck in a rut (Amy Adams) decides to cook all 524 recipes in Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Along the way, we’re treated to scenes of Child (played by Meryl Streep) in Paris during the ’40s and ’50s. Streep will no doubt rule, but this is a total chick flick all the way. Ladies, the line forms to the left. Guys, get the hell out of here while you can.
A Perfect Getaway
A couple on their honeymoon (Milla Jovovich and Steve Zahn – yeah, right) head to Hawaii and stumble across a few other couples. When the bodies start to pile up, and news arrives of a pair of killers on the loose, which couple will be revealed as the killers? I don’t know how it ends, but I’m guessing some kind of major twist will be thrown in there. Hey, I’m just happy to see Steve Zahn branching out from his usual comedic roles.
Cold Souls
Paul Giamatti plays himself in this film which hearkens back to Being John Malkovich. In Cold Souls, Giamatti decides to unburden his life by getting rid of his soul (apparently you can do that in the film). But when his soul ends up on the black market in Russia, it’s time for Giamatti to spring into action and retrieve his immortal spirit. A bizarre premise to be certain, but Giamatti is about as reliable as they come.
Paper Heart
In another film where actors play fictional version of themselves, Paper Heart stars Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera in a mockumentary about finding love. Seth Rogen has a cameo, and the film has been getting solid ratings so far (most likely in spite of Rogen’s appearance).
