[...] Road House (1989) – Patrick Swayze is Dalton, a legendary figure in the bar business who rolls into a Missouri town to clean up the Double Deuce, a nightclub where brawls and blood are a frequent sight. It’s not long before he’s boffing the local doctor (Kelly Lynch) and butting heads with the resident evil millionaire (Ben Gazzara). When things really start to heat up, he calls on the help of his friend and mentor, Wade Garrett (Sam Elliott in his most grizzled role ever), and the two men battle monster trucks, Terry Funk, prison rapists, and stuffed polar bears who enjoy tipping over onto fat henchmen. Truly the pinnacle of white trash cinema, Road House has mullets, endless fistfights, outrageous dialogue (“Pain don’t hurt.”), and on-screen performances from the late Jeff Healey. Mike Nelson of Mystery Science Theater 3000–with tongue planted firmly in cheek–has hailed it as “the single finest American film,” and it even inspired an off-Broadway musical in 2003. This film will one day develop a mind of its own and rule the Earth…and I can hardly wait. [...]
