Good 420 Movies

These good 420 movies are well-suited for those who celebrate April 20th as a day to smoke a little reefer. Of course, if you do celebrate 4/20, then there’s a strong chance that you’re getting wasted the rest of the year, too. In case you’re wondering, you can thank a group of 1971 California high school kids, as they were the first known to light up daily at 4:20 in the afternoon.

Fun Cannabis Fact: Did you know Abraham Lincoln once wrote that one of his favorite pastimes was “smoking a pipe of sweet hemp”? Maybe the whole thing with John Wilkes Booth was a pot deal gone bad, but I could be mistaken.

Now on with our list of good 420 movies…

Dazed and Confused (1993) – Richard Linklater directs this tale of teenage life in 1970’s Texas. Jason London stars as the star football player who hesitates to sign a pledge not to smoke pot in the offseason, and Wiley Wiggins plays a freshman who dodges seniors bent on hazing him (including Ben Affleck). Matthew McConaughey makes a major impression as an older guy who still hangs out with the high school crowd, and the excellent supporting cast includes everyone from Milla Jovovich to Parker Posey. And don’t forget about the groovy soundtrack courtesy of Foghat, KISS, and Ted Nugent.

Easy Rider (1969) – If you’re looking to mellow out and explore the changing climate of America in the Vietnam era, then check out this Dennis Hopper flick. He and Peter Fonda play a couple of bike-riding drug runners who try to make it to New Orleans in time for Mardi Gras. Along the way, they stop at a commune and enjoy some free love, befriend an alcoholic attorney (Jack Nicholson), and come face-to-face with the seedy underbelly of the nation. Nicholson became a star thanks to the film, and the counter-culture message helped to usher in the New Hollywood phase.

The Wackness (2008) – With his family in danger of being evicted, teenage Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) sells cannabis to help make ends meet. He also trades it to a shrink, Dr. Jeffrey Squires (Ben Kingsley) in exchange for therapy. Doctor and patient bond over their deteriorating family lives, and Luke finds love for the first time with Squires’ stepdaughter (Olivia Thirlby). A coming-of-age tale with plenty of 420 relevance.

The Tripper (2007) – When a group of modern-day hippies head to an annual concert, little do they know that they’ll have to contend with a conservative slasher wearing a Ronald Reagan mask and wielding an axe. As the counter-culture types drop like flies, the survivors must make a desperate stand in this homage to horror flicks of the ‘70s. David Arquette directs, and the cast includes Thomas Jane, Lukas Haas, Jason Mewes, Balthazar Getty, Paul Reubens, and Courtney Cox.

Nice Dreams (1981) – Cheech and Chong open an ice cream stand, but it turns out that the product is made from experimental marijuana. While they dream of getting rich, the cops (led by Stacey Keach as Sgt. Stedanko from Up in Smoke) are hot on their trail. The legendary stoner duo dodge angry bikers, snort cocaine, sign away all their possessions, and even spend the night in a mental asylum. Watch for a cameo from LSD advocate and counter-culture icon Timothy Leary.

Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie (1980) – Why not celebrate 420 by watching a double dose of Cheech & Chong? This time around, Cheech gets ready for a date with a sexy social worker, and Chong raises hell around town with Cheech’s stoner cousin, Red. Aliens make an appearance, and the boys even get to try some “Space Coke.” Pop it in the DVD player, get baked, and prepare to have a helluva time.

Saving Grace (2000) – After her husband commits suicide, Grace Trevethyn (Brenda Blethyn), a straight-laced UK housewife, faces massive debt and possible eviction. But since she’s a talented horticulturalist, she hatches a scheme to grow marijuana and pay off what she owes. But can she keep the locals from finding out what she’s up to? A good-natured comedy that’s perfect for middle-aged stoners, Saving Grace was co-written by late night host Craig Ferguson (he also co-stars as Grace’s gardener).

Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005) – This Showtime movie was based on the 2004 musical and the unintentionally hilarious 1936 exploitation film. In it, young Jimmy Harper (Christian Campbell) learns about the evils of marijuana the hard way, and it threatens to tear apart his relationship with good-girl Mary Jane (Kristin Bell). Filled with musical numbers and plenty of pot-based comedy, this film is ideal for stoners looking to mock the conservative order of things. Neve Campbell and Alan Cumming co-star.

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006) – When they discover that all the greatest rock legends have used the same pick, oddball musicians Jack Black and Kyle Gass set out to gain The Pick of Destiny. But before they can become hard-rocking superstars, they’ll have to contend with a breakup of the band, a “rock-off” with Satan (Dave Grohl), and a bizarre hallucination featuring Sasquatch. Look for cameos from Ronnie James Dio, Meat Loaf, Tim Robbins, John C. Reilly (as Sasquatch), and Ben Stiller.

Idle Hands (1999) – When his hand (yes, his hand) ends up committing a series of grisly murders, a stoner teen (Devon Sawa) sets out to stop it. He’ll get some assistance from his baked (and already dead) pals, played by Seth Green and Elden Henson, as well as the girl-next-door (Jessica Alba). If you’ve ever wanted to see a severed hand get stoned, then this horror/comedy is the one for you.
