Good Sleepover Movies

Girls, if you’re looking for good sleepover movies, then you’ve come to the right place. In between messing with your hair, talking about boys, and pigging out on sweets, the following films will provide a nice distraction during a long night of girly fun.

Some of you may be wondering if I’m actually qualified to put together a list of good sleepover movies. While I’ve never been to an actual slumber party, I’ve spent plenty of time spying on them from the bushes outside. That’s a joke, of course, so don’t go and call Chris Hansen on me. Despite my low level of estrogen, I’m confident that you’ll enjoy these films. If not, I’ll come over and paint your toenails for free.

Mean Girls (2004) – Lindsay Lohan turned out one good sleepover movie before her career landed in the toilet and she started dating women. That movie was Mean Girls, a film written and co-starring Tina Fey. Lohan stars as Cady Heron, a home-schooled girl who’s completely unprepared for the clicks at her new high school. She agrees to help a social misfit (Lizzy Caplan) get revenge on the popular girls known as the Plastics (Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert) by infiltrating their group, but will being one of the “cool kids” suddenly change Cady? Also starring Tim Meadows, Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer, and Jonathan Bennett.

The Notebook (2004) – An elderly man in a nursing home (James Garner) tells a fellow patient (Gena Rowlands) about his romance with a woman named Allie during the 1940s (the young couple is played by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams). Flashbacks fill in their relationship, which is threatened by the outbreak of World War II and Allie’s romance with a wealthy Southern gentleman. Can Allie and Noah overcome their difficulties and find true love? An interesting twist, as well as a bittersweet ending, makes The Notebook a guaranteed hit with women of all ages.

Pretty in Pink (1986) – When it comes to teen films of the ’80s, Pretty in Pink is hard to beat. Telling the story of a poor girl (Molly Ringwald) who falls in love with a wealthy classmate (Andrew McCarthy), it proved to be yet another hit for John Hughes, the man behind such Brat Pack classics as Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. Fans of Battlestar Galactica will also get a kick out of a much younger Kate Vernon (aka Ellen Tigh) as the bitchy Benny. Jon Cryer and James Spader co-star.

Mamma Mia! (2008) – The highest-grossing musical ever made (at least as of this writing), Mamma Mia! deals with Sophie Sheridan’s (Amanda Seyfried) plan to learn the identity of her father on the eve of her wedding. Finding the names of three promising candidates (Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Stellan Skarsgard) in her mother’s diary, she sends each a wedding invitation without telling her mother (Meryl Streep). Filled with lively music originally created by Swedish supergroup ABBA.

Chocolat (2000) – Juliette Binoche plays a single mother who arrives in a small French village, opens up a chocolate shop, and begins to change the lives of the locals. Brimming with romance, Chocolat was an international smash hit, and women of all ages will want to see Johnny Depp as a soulful gypsy named Roux.

Bring It On (2000) – Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) is elected to take over her school’s celebrated cheerleading program, but her tenure is plagued with problems from the beginning. When she learns her predecessor copied routines from an inner-city squad, she must decide whether to keep using the stolen moves or develop new ones and risk losing the national championships. With plenty of great music and cheerleading action, Bring It On has inspired four straight-to-DVD sequels. Also starring Eliza Dushku, Jesse Bradford, Gabrielle Union, and Clare Kramer. When it comes to teenage girls and good sleepover movies, this one can’t miss.

Never Been Kissed (1999) – A 25-year-old copy-editor who dreams of being a reporter, Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore) is assigned to go undercover at a high school and write about what really goes on within the walls of grades nine through twelve. Having been a geek during her first time through high school, she requires copious amounts of coaching from her younger brother (David Arquette) and co-worker (Molly Shannon). She also falls head-over-heels with her English teacher, but he won’t return her affection since he believes her to be a real student. A sweet comedy for anyone who felt awkward during their teen years.

What a Girl Wants (2003) – Amanda Bynes stars as Daphne Reynolds, a young girl who dreams of meeting the father she’s never known. After suddenly hopping a flight to London, she learns her mysterious parent is actually a British politician and aristocrat (Colin Firth). Since he never knew she existed, her father wants to know her better, but their attempts at being together are hampered at every turn by his scheming fiancee (Anna Chancellor) and her daughter (Christina Cole). Oh, there’s also a cute British musician (Oliver James) who catches Daphne’s eye.

Charlie’s Angels (2000) – If you’re looking for a little grrl power in your slumber party movies, why not give Charlie’s Angels a try? Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu star as three women who work for a private investigation agency managed by Bosley (Bill Murray) and owned by the mysterious Charlie (voiced by John Forsythe). High-energy fight scenes are a highlight of the film, as are supporting performances from Sam Rockwell and Crispin Glover. A fun, over-the-top way to pass 100 minutes.

Clueless (1995) – Set in a Beverly Hills high school, Clueless is based on the novel Emma, written in 1815 by Jane Austen. Alicia Silverstone stars as Cher Horowitz, a sweet-yet-ditzy high school student who navigates life largely through charm, good looks, and money. Cher grows as a person during the course of the film, especially when she begins to realize that she has feelings for her socially-conscious stepbrother (Paul Rudd). Filled with recognizable faces, Clueless co-stars Brittany Murphy, Dan Hedaya, Donald Faison, Jeremy Sisto and Breckin Meyer).
