Bananas (1971) – Woody Allen wrote and directed this comedy about a neurotic man (surprise!) who gets caught up in a revolution in San Marcos while trying to impress a girl. Ranking on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest comedies of all time, Bananas offers such bizarre moments as J. Edgar Hoover dressed as a black woman and Howard Cosell doing play-by-play for a sexual encounter. Keep an eye out for Sylvester Stallone in an uncredited role as a thug in the subway.

Caddyshack (1980) – One of the greatest movies for guys ever made, Caddyshack is set at the fictional Bushwood Country Club. Members include a self-absorbed playboy (Chevy Chase), a small-minded judge (Ted Knight), and a loudmouth real estate developer (Rodney Dangerfield). As these men butt heads and generally make fools of themselves, a hard-working caddy (Michael O’Keefe) tries to gain a college scholarship in order to better himself. And let’s not forget about the gopher problem on the course, something which is entrusted to the deranged assistant groundskeeper (Bill Murray in one of his most memorable movie roles). While director Harold Ramis never attended film school, he still manages to hit this one out of the ‘ol comedy ballpark.

Ball of Fire (1941) – Gary Cooper leads the cast as Professor Bertram Potts, one of several eggheads who’ve been living in isolation for years while compiling an encyclopedia containing all the knowledge of mankind. When some independent research places him in the path of burlesque performer “Sugarpuss” O’Shea (Barbara Stanwyck), the two begin to develop a mutual attraction. Will the couple get together, or will her ill-tempered mob suitor spoil the relationship? Nominated for four Academy Awards, it was just one of many classic movies directed by the legendary Howard Hawks.

EuroTrip (2004) – Scotty Thomas (Scott Mechlowicz), a recently-graduated high school student, travels across Europe in search of his sexy German pen pal (Jessica Bohrs). He’s joined by his three closest friends (Jacob Pitts, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Travis Wester), and the often clueless Americans are confronted with an endless stream of bizarre locals. Vinnie Jones co-stars as a soccer hooligan, Lucy Lawless is a dominatrix in Amsterdam, and Matt Damon has an uncredited cameo as the lead singer for a rock band. Off-kilter comedy at its finest.

My Man Godfrey (1936) – William Powell is Godfrey Park, a down-on-his-luck man struggling through the events of the Great Depression. Thanks to a bizarre series of events, he winds up being hired as the butler for the wealthy Bullock family. And before you can say “screwball comedy,” he becomes the object of affection for the kindhearted Irene Bullock (Carole Lombard). Nominated for six Academy Awards, My Man Godfrey made movie history as the first film to be nominated in all four acting categories.

A Fish Called Wanda (1988) – Take veterans from the Monty Python comedy troupe and some equally talented American actors, and you have this combination crime movie and comedy about an unhappy lawyer who gets caught up in the intrigues of a bunch of jewel thieves. Jamie Lee Cutis is the seductress, Michael Palin is the fish-lover with a stutter, and Kevin Kline won an Oscar for his role as a dimwitted ex-assassin for the CIA. Nominated for multiple Oscars, it would be followed nine years later by the disappointing Fierce Creatures (which features the same group of actors in different roles).

Young Frankenstein (1974) – Mel Brooks, well-known for poking fun at various film genres, sets his sights on the old Universal movie monsters with this black and white comedy starring Gene Wilder as the grandson of the infamous Dr. Frankenstein. When he inherits the family estate in Transylvania, he decides to take up where his ancestor left off. The resulting experiments result in a monster (Peter Boyle) who possesses a giant penis and below-average talent at singing and dancing. Marty Feldman is a scream as Igor, and the lovely ladies of the cast include Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, and Madeline Kahn. And watch out for Gene Hackman as a blind hermit.

MASH (1970) – The basis for the hit TV show, this dark satire from Robert Altman follows the bawdy adventures of a group of surgeons for a mobile medical hospital during the Korean War. Donald Sutherland is Hawkeye, Elliott Gould is Trapper John, Sally Kellerman is “Hot Lips” Houlihan, and Robert Duvall is Frank Burns. Gary Burghoff co-stars as “Radar” O’Reilly, the only member of the movie cast to appear on the television show. Nominated for five Academy Awards (and winning for Best Screenplay), MASH takes a pointed look at the absurdity of war. Although set in Korea, it was obvious to anyone at the time that it was really about the Vietnam War and the senseless carnage surrounding it.

Some Like It Hot (1959) – After witnessing a mob massacre, musicians Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) disguise themselves as women, join an all-girl band, and head to Florida to hide out. But one of their bandmates is the sultry Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) and soon both men are competing for her affections. A chance encounter with the gangsters leads to a renewed bout of danger and hilarity, and Jerry must fend off the unwanted advances of a millionaire who’s fallen head over heels for what he believes to be a woman. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, Some Like It Hot received six Oscar nominations (winning one award). Monroe gets to show off her singing voice, performing such tunes as “I Wanna Be Loved By You” and “Runnin’ Wild.”

American Pie (1999) – A blockbuster movie that’s still spawning straight-to-DVD sequels (all featuring Eugene Levy), American Pie follows four high school seniors (Thomas Ian Nicholas, Chris Klein, Jason Biggs, and Eddie Kaye Thomas) who make a pact to get laid before graduation. As they attempt to make good on their vow, each runs into unexpected difficulty, often in the form of an attractive female. Jim Levenstein (Biggs) is the real star of the film, thanks largely to his uncomfortable talks with his dad (Levy) and his interaction with a sexy foreign exchange student (Shannon Elizabeth). Seann William Scott co-stars as the memorable Steve Stifler, and the rest of the cast includes such familiar names as Alyson Hannigan, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, and Natasha Lyonne.
