Fans of Angelina Jolie movies will want to take a look at these 10 films by the actress famous for her plump lips, romance with Brad Pitt, and fondness for adopting kids from foreign countries. These are, in my opinion, the finest examples of her acting ability, and it’s little surprise that many received awards or, at the very least, nominations.

Changeling (2008) – Of all the films of Angelina Jolie, there’s little doubt that this is one of her finest performances. She of the massive lips plays Christine Collins, a working mom in 1928 Los Angeles who returns home one day to find her son missing. One police report and several months later, she’s reunited with her son, but she quickly points out that the boy the police put forward isn’t her child. They suggest she give the kid a spin “on a trial basis,” and Christine finds that going to the media results in a number of unpleasant consequences. Directed by Clint Eastwood, it’s a touching film about corruption and the undying love of a mother for her child. And, amazingly enough, it’s based on a true story.

Girl, Interrupted (1999) – While Winona Ryder gets top billing in this film about a teenage girl undergoing psychiatric treatment in 1967, it’s Jolie who steals the show with her portrayal of the chaotically magnetic Lisa Rowe. Critics and colleagues agreed, awarding her a Golden Globe, Academy Award, and SAG Award for her performance.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) – Few Angelina Jolie movies have caused quite the stir that this one did, largely due to the off-screen antics of the two leads. This is the film that brought the Brad Pitt/Jennifer Aniston marriage tumbling down, as Pitt and Jolie fell in love on the set. The film isn’t bad, either, with two of the world’s most beautiful people playing a bored married couple who are secretly assassins for the government. When they’re assigned to kill the same man, it touches off an action-packed sequence of fights, shootouts, and car chases. Co-starring Vince Vaughn, Keith David, Adam Brody, and Kerry Washington.

Foxfire (1996) – A group of normal suburban teen girls are empowered by the arrival of a mysterious drifter known as “Legs” (Jolie). The resulting teen rebellion results in tattoos, fires at the school, pervy teachers being confronted, and one unlucky parent taking a bullet in the chest. Teen angst never looked so good. Co-starring Jenny Shimizu, who Jolie fell madly in love with off-screen.

A Mighty Heart (2007) – Jolie plays Mariane Pearl, the real-life spouse of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Sadly, Daniel was kidnapped and beheaded in 2002 by Islamic militants. This heartbreaking film follows the efforts to locate Daniel, and then the quest to bring his killers to justice. Jolie received some flack for playing the biracial Pearl, but it turns out the widow personally chose her for the role.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) – Still one of the best known Angelina Jolie movies, largely due to the actress portraying the world’s most iconic, big-breasted video game heroine. Jolie’s real-life dad, Jon Voight, co-stars as Lara’s long-dead father, and a pre-Bond Daniel Craig is fellow tomb raider Alex West. At stake is an artifact that can give its wielder power over time and space, and the secretive Illuminati are willing to do anything to get their hands on it.

Pushing Tin (1998) – John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton play rival air traffic controllers in this underrated film from director Mike Newell. As the competition escalates, their wives (Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett) are drawn into the fray with unexpected results. It was during the filming of this project that Jolie met and fell for second husband Billy Bob Thornton (you may notice a pattern forming).

Gia (1998) – Jolie won a Golden Globe and SAG Award for her role in this HBO original movie. She plays Gia Marie Carangi, a real-life model who gained attention in the 1980s before dying of AIDS due to chronic drug use. Co-starring Faye Dunaway, Mercedes Ruehl, and a very young Mila Kunis. The most depressing of all Angelina Jolie movies, but still worth watching for the strong performances and cautionary messages.

The Good Shepherd (2006) – Robert De Niro helmed this spy thriller that claimed to tell the untold story of the birth of the Central Intelligence Agency. Matt Damon stars as Edward Wilson, a young man who’s recruited into the ranks of the agency and climbs the ladder through great personal sacrifice. Jolie co-stars as Margaret “Clover” Russell, the sister of a friend who winds up married to Wilson. As you might have guessed, his globetrotting and secret keeping don’t exactly make for a healthy relationship.

Wanted (2008) – James McAvoy plays Wesley Gibson, a frustrated young man stuck in a cubicle and an unfaithful relationship. That’s when Fox (Jolie) enters his life, informing him that the father he never knew was the world’s greatest assassin (and the man who killed him is in the same room). While not the center of the story, Jolie gets to participate in a number of bullet-riddled set pieces and drive fanboys crazy by showing lots of skin. Originally scheduled to appear in the sequel, Jolie pulled out in early 2010.
