Michael Den Boer – Movie Critic Interviews

Another week brings another edition of Critical Juncture, and our guest this time around is Michael Den Boer, the driving force behind the film website known as 10kbullets. His site claims to explore cinema from the arthouse to the grindhouse, and you can find plenty of movie reviews, as well as interviews with filmmakers such as Miguel Coyula, Lance Weiler and Joe Burke. They’ve even got a picture of Peter Lorre at the top of the site, so you just know it’s gonna be good. Founded in 2004, 10kbullets.com takes a closer look at quality films which may have been overlooked by other movie sites. Go ahead and give them a try. You’ll be glad you did.

OnlyGoodMovies: What’s the first movie that you remember seeing?
Michael Den Boer: My first moving was The Shining. I saw it at a drive-in theater in the early 1980s. This movie made a strong impression on me at a very young age, and it still haunts me to this day.

OGM: What’s the most recent movie you’ve seen?
MDB: I can’t remember that last film that I watched in theatres. The last film that I watched in general was a Australian film called Bad Boy Bubby.

OGM: Is there a particular film which you feel is criminally underrated?
MDB: I would have to say that Dario Argento’s The Stendhal Syndrome. It is his most fascinating and transitional film.

OGM: Which director do you feel has turned out the best overall body of work?
MDB: There are so many great directors to choose from. If I had to make a choice I would say that Roman Polanski has a stronger oeuvre than anyone else I can think of.

OGM: From an artistic standpoint, which film do you think is most important?
MDB: Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. For me it is the perfect film where everything just comes together effortlessly. Also, I can watch it time and again, as it never loses any of its impact.

OGM: All artsy considerations aside, which movie is your personal favorite?
MDB: For me, it depends where are I’m at when I answer this question, as my favorite film is never set in stone. At this moment, my favorite film would be Jean Luc Godard’s Contempt.

OGM: In your opinion, which film is entirely overrated?
MDB: I can only pick one? Wow, there are far too many films that are elevated by the masses. After a lot of soul searching I would have to pick Titanic.

OGM: Have you ever walked out of the theatre during a film? If so, what movie was playing?
MDB: The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez. Enough said.

OGM: In your mind, what’s the ultimate goal of a movie critic?
MDB: Through information and insight, expand the readers’ knowledge about the films being covered.

OGM: Time to look into the future. Do you predict any major changes for the movie industry over the next 25 years?
MDB: While I can see the way in which films are presented in theatres or for home viewing continuing to evolve as technology does, I don’t think that the quality (of the lack thereof) and the way films are made via Hollywood will really ever change.

OGM: Here’s another chance to predict the future. Name a relatively unknown actor or actress who’ll be a huge star within five years.
MDB: Olga Kurylenko, she was in the most recent James Bond film Quantum of Solace.

OGM: Besides yourself, who’s your favorite movie critic to read?
MDB: Roger Ebert, the consummate professional who analysis of cinema never fails to surprise me.
