Jason Momoa is the New Conan

The upcoming film adaptation of Conan the Barbarian has found itself a leading man. Jason Momoa, best known as the dreadlocked Ronon Dex on Stargate Atlantis, will play the Cimmerian thief/warrior/king. In development since 2007, the film based on the works of Robert E. Howard will be produced by Lionsgate and Millennium Films and directed by Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

The most famous Conan portrayal came from current governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer. No word if Arnie will make a cameo in the film. It has been reported, however, that Mickey Rourke had been approached about playing Corin, the chieftain father of the lead character.

As for Jason Momoa, he was born in Hawaii and raised in the exciting environment of Norwalk, Iowa. Standing 6’5″ tall, he’s been the domestic partner of Lisa Bonet since 2005, and the couple have a child together. His father is Hawaiian, and he inherited Irish, German and Native American blood from his mother’s side of the family.

Momoa, 30, can also be seen this summer in HBO’s adaptation of Game of Thrones. Another memorable role was that of Jason Ioane on Baywatch Hawaii from 1999 until 2001.

Let’s hope he can swing a sword as well as he can surf.
