Lost Series Finale – Final Thoughts
The Lost series finale took place last night, and I suppose it’s only appropriate that I join the millions of other Internet geeks who are weighing in with their opinions today. It’s been a long journey to get to this point, and now we have to face life without our old pals Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke…and even Boone. As a final tribute, I’ll provide a few thoughts of my own, share thoughts from others across the Internet, and provide some quality links for additional reading. I’ll even share a few of the projects that members of the Lost cast have lined up next, just so you don’t miss Benjamin Linus in his next wild-eyed role.
Lost Series Finale Recap
While I watched the first two seasons of Lost religiously, I’ve only sporadically followed the show since then (tuning in to see Charlie finally die, etc.). That means I’m probably not the best qualified to explain mirror universes and pools of golden light. You can, however, click on this link for a detailed Lost series finale recap. After you’re done there, head on over to the Washington Post website and read a dueling analysis of the Lost season finale from writers Liz Kelly and Jen Chaney.
Lost Alternate Endings
The creators of Lost recently offered up some alternate endings on the Jimmy Kimmel show. By clicking on the link, you’ll be able to see the other Lost endings that are sure to have people talking.
My Thoughts
Okay, so here are my thoughts on the series finale of Lost. I’m not worried about spoilers, so I hope you’ve already viewed the episode. If not, you might want to stop here.
- Running 2 ½ hours, the show certainly got enough time for a proper ending. But, damn, those commercials never seemed to end. I read today that the final episode of Lost had over 45 minutes of ads. Guess the network wasn’t going to miss out on the opportunity to make some money.
- My interpretation of the ending? The events on the island all happened in “real-life,” but the mirror universe was a kind of purgatory where everyone gathered before moving on to the great beyond. Of course, I don’t even claim to know what was going on in half the episode.
- Nice to see the dog and Jack’s father make returns. If I ever bleed to death after being stabbed, I hope a nice dog is there to keep me company. In real life, however, that dog would probably be eating Jack’s ass after he passed on.
- I was glad to see Ben have a reduced role. I liked him in Season 2 as a scheming prisoner, but after that he just got out of hand. And there’s just something about Michael Emerson’s bug-eyed appearance that irritates me. I guess nobody’s perfect.
- Why weren’t people like Michael, Walt, Ernst, Eko, and Ana-Lucia in the final church scene?
- They sure didn’t spare the sentimental music, did they? The episode seemed to be trying very hard to give everyone a happy ending and elicit a few tears in the process.
- Drive Shaft makes one last appearance. Good riddance.
- While the creators promised to answer every question on the show, I have a feeling that their definition of “answer every question” may differ from the average fan. Does anyone remember the other Jack at the research station from the end of Season One? Did that ever get explained? I don’t think so.
- Crazy Claire. Another character I could’ve done without.
- I did love the scenes between Terry O’Quinn and Matthew Fox, especially the moments in the mirror universe. O’Quinn is just great any way you cut it.
- I knew Evangeline Lilly would look awesome in a tiny dress and heels. This episode proved it in spades. Wow.
Fan Comments on the Lost Series Finale
While I could go on and on with snarky comments and an occasional insightful observation, let’s shift gears and take a look at a few fan comments gathered from the Internet. If these are any indication, then the last episode of Lost seemed to divide viewers down the middle. Some considered it an appropriate way to conclude the story, while others felt cheated by what they perceived as not enough answers.
- “For the thinkers, it was awesome. For the masses, it was not.” (Oh, what a pretentious asshole.)
- “I don’t even care that hardly anything got answered. I can draw my own conclusions.”
- “At least there will not be a spin-off series–everybody is dead.”
- “Yeah, I cried.”
- “The Mary Tyler Moore finale was much better.” (This one’s my favorite. Thanks, grandpa.)
- “I thank the creators of Lost for making me think about things and providing us all with something with real with substance, depth and thought.”
- “I honestly question the intelligence of anyone that enjoyed the ending of this show.”
- “More commercials than show. ABC sucks.”
- “Gilligan’s Island was better.” (A comedian is born right in front of our eyes.)
- “I spent hours awake afterwards thinking about it, thinking about life, the afterlife and all the questions in between. If a show can do that, then its a pretty good show I think.”
- “The beauty of Lost is that we are always guessing and using our imaginations to find out what it meant to us individually. Those who feel cheated missed the point entirely. What a ride!”
The Future of the Lost Cast
Now that the Lost series finale has aired, you may be wondering what’s next for all your favorite castaways? Well, wonder no more! Here’s the lowdown on what a few of the cast have lined up next:
- Matthew Fox (Jack) is attached to the comic book adaptation Billy Smoke, but no progress has occurred on that project in a while. He has repeatedly stated that he’s done with television after Lost.
- Evangeline Lilly (Kate) will appear in Real Steel, a futuristic boxing drama co-starring Hugh Jackman and Kevin Durand. She has also claimed that she may retire and dedicate her time to humanitarian work.
- Josh Holloway (Sawyer) has nothing lined up. He plans to return to Hollywood and search for his next project.
- Terry O’Quinn (Locke) has been pitching a TV show starring himself and Michael Emerson (Ben) as two middle-aged men living in the suburbs.
- Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet) currently stars as Erica Evans on the TV series V. She’ll also be appearing in the upcoming film Answers to Nothing.
- Daniel Dae Kim (Jin-Soo Kwon) will be playing Chin Ho Kelly on CBS’ remake of Hawaii Five-O.
- Jeff Fahey (Frank Lapidus) will appear in Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming action film Machete. He’ll co-star alongside fellow Lost alum Michelle Rodriguez (Ana Lucia).
- Ian Somerhalder (Boone) plays Damon Salvatore on television’s The Vampire Diaries. Upcoming movies include How to Make Love to a Woman and Cradlewood.
