Roger Ebert Hates 3-D
The godfather of movie critics, Roger Ebert, has an excellent new article in Newsweek entitled “Why I Hate 3-D (And You Should Too).” I wanted to take a moment and recommend this piece to our Only Good Movies readers, as Ebert is spot-on in his concerns and criticisms of cinema’s latest fad.

I don’t want to spoil the piece for you, but allow me to whet your appetite by listing the nine points Ebert brings up during his argument. For more details on each, just click on the link above.
- It’s the waste of a dimension.
- It adds nothing to the experience.
- It can be a distraction.
- It can create nausea and headaches.
- Have you noticed that 3-D seems a little dim?
- There’s money to be made in selling new digital projectors.
- Theaters slap on a surcharge of $5 to $7.50 for 3-D.
- I cannot imagine a serious drams, such as Up in the Air or The Hurt Locker, in 3-D.
- Whenever Hollywood has felt threatened, it has turned to technology: sound, color, widescreen, Cinerama, 3-D, stereophonic sound, and now 3-D again.
Whether you agree with his argument or not, you’ll have to acknowledge that Ebert’s stuff is always well-written and filled with a genuine love for cinema. He really takes 3-D to task, though, calling it both a “waste” and “suicidal.” So do yourself a favor and take a side on the great 3-D debate. For that matter, you’re welcome to weight in on the comments section.
