12 New Action Movies to See in 2010

Here’s a list of 12 new action movies to see in 2010. Some of these may bleed over into other genres a bit, but they’re still guaranteed to deliver plenty of explosions, shootouts, and senseless hand-to-hand combat. After taking a look at the new action movie to see in 2010, I tend to wonder if we’re not about to experience a surge in this kind of film. Being a child of the ‘80s, that would suit me just fine.

Bitch Slap – Three babes with an attitude (America Olivo, Erin Cummings and Julia Voth) plot to steal $200 million in diamonds from a crime lord, but they’ll have to contend with nuns, cowgirls, punks and many more bizarre characters. A good old-fashioned exploitation film, Bitch Slap also stars Michael Hurst, Lucy Lawless, Kevin Sorbo, Zoe Bell and Renee O’Connor. If you like movies with girls and gun, this one is a must-see. Currently in limited release in the United States.

From Paris With Love – Starring John Travolta and co-written by Luc Besson, this film tries to re-imagine the Scientologist actor as a modern-day action star, just like Liam Neeson in The Taken. When terrorists plan to wreak havoc in Paris, an American spy (Travolta) and an employee in the U.S. embassy (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) must join forces.

Machete – Danny Trejo headlines an eclectic cast that includes Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan and Cheech Marin. Trejo plays a former Federale from Mexico who gets caught up in a plot to kill a corrupt senator. Double-crossed and on the run, he puts together a small army and goes looking for revenge. Directed by Robert Rodriguez, this one should be filled with plenty of grindhouse-flavored fun. It releases in April of 2010.

The A-Team – A classic television favorite finally gets the big-screen treatment. Intended as more of a serious action film, it will star Liam Neeson (Hannibal Smith), Bradley Cooper (Faceman), Quinton Jackson (B.A.), and Sharlto Copley (Murdock). In case you don’t recognize the names, Jackson is a mixed-martial-arts fighter, and Copley played the lead in last year’s District 9. A few of the original cast will be making cameos, although Mr. T reportedly turned down the opportunity (did he have something better to do?!). Look for it in June of 2010.

Predators – This one definitely makes my list of the new action movies to see in 2010. Intended as a direct sequel to the original Predator, this film revolves around a group of humans who are captured and transported to a harsh jungle planet controlled by the Predator race. Forced to avoid being hunted down by Predators and alien creatures alike, the group must also deal with internal conflict and a serial killer in their midst. Produced by Robert Rodriguez and starring Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov and Walton Goggins. Scheduled for a July release.

Knight & Day – Intended for early July, this film marks the first teaming of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz since Vanilla Sky. When a secret agent (Cruise) goes on a blind date with a woman who‘s unlucky in love Diaz), he accidentally gets her involved in heaping helpings of intrigue and action. Maggie Grace and Peter Sarsgaard co-star.

Inception – Details are still a bit sketchy on this action/sci-fi/thriller about a CEO who becomes involved in a blackmail scandal, but it stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Dreams also play an important part in the film, and the wild trailer shows whole parts of the city being altered. Christopher Nolan directs, and that’s always a good sign.

Salt – Hitting theaters in July of 2010, this action thriller follows the story of Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent accused of being a Russian sleeper bent on the assassination of the President of the United States. Expect plenty of twists and turns in this one, as Evelyn won’t know who to trust until the film’s final frames.

The Expendables – A group of mercenaries are hired to travel to South America and rub out a violent dictator. Expect plenty of double-crosses and bloodshed. The cast of this film is the real star, with Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis all scheduled to appear. Pure heaven for those who grew up in the era of Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. Scheduled for an August, 2010 release.

Red Dawn – A remake of the ‘80s classic that featured so many future stars (Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, etc.), Red Dawn brings the events of the film into the modern age and casts the Chinese as the big villains. When foreign forces land on American soil, it’s up to a group of high school kids to take to the mountains and wage non-stop guerilla warfare against the enemy. Wolverines! Look for it around Thanksgiving.

Unstoppable – Denzel Washington and Chris Pine will star in this Tony Scott (Top Gun, Crimson Tide, Man on Fire) film scheduled for November of 2010. A runaway train loaded with toxic chemicals threatens to wipe out a town, and it’s up to a pair of railroad workers to save the day.

The Green Hornet – Funnyman Seth Rogen dons a green mask, trenchcoat and fedora to fight crime in this superhero/action film scheduled for a December, 2010 release. Can Rogen play a believable badass? At least it stars Christoph Waltz as the villainous Chudnofsky, an actor who really rose to prominence following the release of Inglourious Basterds (he played the Jew-hunting Nazi).
