Being a child of the ‘80s, I just can’t seem to get enough of action movies. From guys leaping into the air and firing a pair of .45s, to tense martial arts showdowns resulting in massive head trauma, I love every element of the genre. And while the best action films came in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, you may be surprised to know that modern action flicks aren’t too bad, either. In this OGM post, I’ll be taking a look at good action movies 2006 and good action movies 2007. Granted, these weren’t the best years for the genre, but there were still several films worth seeing. Good Action Movies 2007

I’ve went ahead and broken these recommendations down into sections. First up, we’ll take a look at good action movies 2007.

300 (2007) – Zack Snyder directs and Gerard Butler shows off his physique in this chest-thumping story about an elite group of Spartan warriors kicking the crap out of the invading Persians. If you’re a guy, it’s hard not to feel a rush of testosterone when King Leonidas bellows, “This is Sparta!” And if you’re a gal, well, you’ll probably spend the entire film drooling over all the hot man-flesh on display. Either way, 300 is a rush of pure adrenaline with its endless battle scenes and talk of fighting in the face of impossible odds. Plus, there’s a hunchback with a really nifty hat.

Live Free or Die Hard (2007) – Nineteen years after the events in Nakatomi Plaza, John McClane (Bruce Willis) must take on a ruthless gang of cyber terrorists led by Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant). McClane gets some help from Matt Farrell (Justin Long), a computer whiz, while Gabriel is assisted by the lethal Mai Linh (the always-sexy Maggie Q). The rating this time was cut down to PG-13, so there’s not quite as much cursing and violence, but there’s still more than enough to go around. Sure, it’s not as good as the previous Die Hard films, but even a watered-down John McClane flick is pretty damned entertaining. Besides, I enjoyed the fact that Gabriel seemed legitimately terrified of McClane, something which you usually don’t see from a movie villain.

Hot Fuzz (2007) – Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and director Edgar Wright team up once again following their smash zombie hit, Shaun of the Dead. This time around, the trio takes on the action movies genre. Pegg is Nicholas Angel, a London cop who’s so competent that he makes those around him seem lazy by comparison. This earns him a transfer to a supposedly crime-free village, where he becomes acquainted with the locals, especially Danny Butterman (Frost), an incompetent cop with an action movie fetish. As it turns out, the village isn’t as quite as expected, and a series of grisly murders begin to occur. Angel jumps into action, and the film manages to spoof the genre by arming senior citizens and having them fire off thousands of rounds in slow-motion from dramatic angles. Timothy Dalton also turns in one of the most charismatic performances of his career.

Shoot ‘Em Up (2007) – If you’re looking for an action movie that’s unapologetically over the top, then Shoot ‘Em Up is the film for you. Clive Owen plays the mysterious Mr. Smith, a carrot-eating loner who ends up protecting a newborn baby from a gang of hitmen led by Hertz (Paul Giamatti). Along the way, he teams up with a lactating prostitute played by Monica Bellucci, and the trio unravel a plot involving politicians, gun control, and even bone marrow transplants. Mr. Smith seems to kill hundreds of people in this film, and one guy even falls victim to a carrot. Giamatti is entertaining as a lethal assassin who’s also fond of talking to his wife on the phone.

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) – Jason Bourne, the former CIA assassin played by Matt Damon, returns for his third big screen adventure. Escaping from the cops in Moscow, he bounces around from Paris to New York, looking for revenge on those who turned him into a killer and then betrayed him. There’s plenty of action in this one, as Bourne must take on local authorities and a series of trained assassins. The all-star cast includes Julia Stiles, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, and Paddy Considine.

And now, let’s jump back one more year and peruse some good action movies 2006.

Children of Men (2006) – Another Clive Owen film, Children of Men takes place in a dark future where years of pollution have rendered humanity incapable of reproducing. With less than a century left on the planet, society is on the verge of collapse. Owen plays Theo, a bureaucrat who gets drawn into a plot involving a terrorist group and a young woman trying to escape the U.K. When he learns the girl is pregnant, Theo resolves to do whatever it takes to help her. Many consider this film a modern sci-fi/action classic, and I wouldn’t disagree. And it’s always great to see Michael Caine in a supporting role, this time as a hippie ex-cartoonist who smokes weed and cares for his catatonic wife.

Mission: Impossible III (2006) – Tom Cruise may be crazy, but he sure knows how to make an action movie. In this sequel directed by J.J. Abrams, Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, now retired and happily dating a nurse. But that all goes out the window when his former protégé is kidnapped by ruthless black market arms dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Maggie Q, Ving Rhames, and Simon Pegg also get in on the action. And if you’ve ever dreamed of a fight to the death between Tom Cruise and Philip Seymour Hoffman, then your wish has been granted.

Fearless (2006) – Jet Li stars in this action movie loosely based on the life of Huo Yuanjia, a celebrated figure from China. Much of the film follows his growth as a martial artist and a man, until he eventually begins to take on foreign fighters in an effort to restore national pride. This leads to a series of intriguing match-ups, including battling an American wrestler, a British boxer, a Spanish fencer, and a Prussian lancer. This was announced as Li’s last wushu epic, and it’s worth seeing for that fact alone.

Curse of the Golden Flower (2006) – Another Chinese epic, this is one of the country’s most expensive films to date. Set during the 10th century in China, it tells the story of various intrigues within the court of Emperor Ping (Chow Yun-Fat) and Empress Liang (Gong Li). There’s also plenty of battle to be had, including an assault on the Imperial palace by thousands of men in golden plate armor. Beautifully shot, this is a must-see for those of you who enjoyed films like Hero and House of Flying Daggers.

Snakes on a Plane (2006) – Okay, maybe this isn’t really a good action movie, but it’s still perversely entertaining to watch Samuel L. Jackson run around and shout lines like, “I’ve had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane.” It’s hardly Citizen Kane, but it will provide more action and laughs than most movies on your local video store’s shelves.
