Good Comedy Movies 2008

Last year provided plenty of laughs, in large part thanks to a number of good comedy movies 2008. The following list details some of the more side-splitting works available on Blu-Ray or DVD, but I’d encourage you to dig a little deeper, as you’re likely to find even more good comedy movies 2008.

Kung Fu Panda – Jack Black provides the voice for Po, an overweight panda who’s proclaimed as a kung fu legend and tasked with protecting the valley against the coming fury of a martial arts master gone bad. The only problem is, Po has absolutely no talent for kung fu, and he would prefer to spend his days stuffing himself with food. A cute and inspirational tale of what people (and pandas) can achieve if they believe in themselves. Features the voices of Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, and Jackie Chan.

Drillbit Taylor – Hilarity ensues when a deserter from the U.S. Army (Owen Wilson) answers an Internet ad to be a bodyguard for a group of freshman. Sure, the critics mostly crapped all over it, but fans of crook-nosed blondes should get a kick out of it. Leslie Mann once again manages to land a role based on her marriage to Judd Apatow (the film’s producer).

Forgetting Sarah Marshall – Lovable slob Peter Bretter (Jason Segal) gets dumped by his fine-ass girlfriend (Kristen Bell) and falls to pieces. To try and recover, he heads to a resort in Hawaii and runs right into his ex and her new man, British rocker Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). Luckily, he receives sympathy and a little bit more from the hottie at the reception desk (Mila Kunis). Will Peter reconcile with his ex, or will he stay with his latest fling? Also staring Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, and Paul Rudd.

Semi-Pro – Will Farrell is up to his usual shenanigans, this time as Jackie Moon, the owner of a 70’s ABA basketball team known as the Flint Tropics. But when word comes down of an impending ABA/NBA merger, can Jackie and his motley crew keep from getting disbanded? The supporting cast is filled with people who’ve entertained you elsewhere, including Woody Harrelson, David Koechner, Andre Benjamin, Will Arnett, and Andy Richter.

Tropic Thunder – Pampered actors shooting a war movie become stranded in the jungle. It’s a simple enough premise, but the cast of Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. manage to turn it into one of the best comedy movies of 2008. Nick Nolte is especially grizzled, and keep an eye out for Tom Cruise in a role designed to make people forget about his real-life hijinks.

Pineapple Express – Seth Rogen and James Franco play a couple of likable potheads who are marked for death by a local drug kingpin (Gary Cole). Stoner humor abounds, as well as plenty of dark comedy that may leave some viewers scratching their heads. Still, it’s a fun film, and Danny R. McBride gets in one of his better comedic performances. Rosie Perez is annoying, as always.

Hamlet 2 – Steve Coogan stars as a failed actor who takes up teaching drama in Tucson, Arizona. When the drama department looks to be on its last legs, he decides to revitalize his students by producing a sequel to Hamlet. Including Jesus and time travel, the play is outrageously over the top. Always nice to see Elizabeth Shue making a comeback.

Step Brothers – Will Farrell and John C. Reilly play step brothers who start as enemies and later bond over their common fondness for porn and martial arts weapons. If you liked Talladega Nights, then this one should be a slam dunk. Richard Jenkins and Mary Steenburgen are enjoyable as the flustered parents of these two lovable losers.

Be Kind Rewind – An unconventional comedy starring Jack Black and Mos Def as two well-meaning guys who set out to replace the magnetically erased stock of a local video store. Blends comedy and sentimentality, plus wisely avoids the usual sickening Hollywood ending.
