The family movies list should come in handy for just about anyone, as we’ve all found ourselves occasionally needing to select a film appropriate for all ages. It can be a tricky proposition, however, as some movies may excite one age group and leave another entirely bored. Hopefully, the ten selections on this family movies list will hold the interest of everyone, whether you decide to select one of the new family movies or perhaps one of the family movies of the 80s. Any way you go, we here at OnlyGoodMovies have got you covered.

Netflix should have all the following in stock, so getting your hands on them will be a snap. And after you watch them, be sure to share your praise or rants on our comments section. I look forward to hearing your opinion.

1. The Rookie (2002) – Inspired by the story of MLB pitcher Jim Morris, this family film picks up with the title character (played by Dennis Quaid) working as a chemistry teacher and baseball coach at a Texas high school. To motivate his students, a bet is made: if they make the state playoffs, Morris will try out for a major league team. When his students hold up their end of the bargain, Morris is forced to put his old shoulder injury to the test. The results are both surprising and uplifting.

2. Mary Poppins (1964) – Julie Andrews stars as a magical nanny who brings joy to the lives of a British family. This delightful family film is also filled with songs ranging from “A Spoonful of Sugar” to “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.” Dick Van Dyke also stars as a Cockney jack-of-all-trades named Bert.

3. The Addams Family (1991) – When discussing family movies of the 90s, The Addams Family is a title which almost always comes up. Based on the popular television show, it tells the story of creepy and kooky characters such as Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Thing and Cousin Itt. MC Hammer provides a number of songs.

4. Stand By Me (1986) – Rob Reiner directed this big screen adaptation of a novella by Stephen King. In it, a group of friends make a two-day trek to find the body of a boy hit by a train. A youthful all-star cast featuring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell and Kiefer Sutherland make this one of the standout family movies of the 80s.

5. Star Wars (1977) – You’ve no doubt seen Star Wars by now, but have you tried watching it with your family? This timeless tale of good versus evil is sure to excite sci-fi fans of all ages, and it’s a perfect example of family movies of the 70s. George Lucas may have faltered in recent years, but he sure knocked it out of the park with this one.

6. Babe (1995) – This charming Australian family movie tells the story of a pig who dreams of being a sheep dog. James Cromwell is wonderful as the farmer who senses something special about Babe. If you want a film which encourages you to never give up on your dreams, then Babe is the picture for you.

7. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) – Family movies of the 70s don’t get much more popular than this fantastical Gene Wilder romp. All sorts of adventures await inside Wonka’s magical chocolate factory, and a group of five children are the lucky recipients of the winning golden tickets. But as the kiddies disregard Willy’s warnings, bizarre fates await them. The lesson: obey you elders or get turned into a giant blueberry.

8. Lassie Come Home (1943) – The timeless story of a boy and his dog. When Lassie’s owner is forced to sell her, she undertakes a dangerous journey over hundreds of miles to return home to the boy she loves. Starring a young Roddy McDowall and Elizabeth Taylor.

9. The Iron Giant (1999) – In this animated film, a lonely boy finds an iron giant who’s fallen from space. As military forces close in, the boy struggles to keep his new friend safe. Featuring the voice talents of Jenifer Aniston, Harry Connick, Jr., Vin Diesel and John Mahoney.

10. National Velvet (1944) – Another classic that’s a must for any family movies list, National Velvet is about a young girl (Elizabeth Taylor) who saves a horse and trains it to compete in the Grand National steeplechase. Also starring Mickey Rooney and Angela Lansbury.
