Scott Matthews – Movies and the Masses

Monday, December 28, 2009 at 6:09 pm

Scott Matthews.  No, not the British singer.  I’m talking about the badass drummer who’s played for the likes of The Dixie Chicks, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and currently The Derailers.  He’s this week’s guest on Movies and the Masses, and he promises to bring a fresh outlook and honest opinions to the table.

But before we get to the Q&A, I want to take a minute and advise you to check out The Derailers if they’re playing in a city near you.  They’ve got a modern sensibility, but their music is also deftly fused with the old school sound of legends like Buck Owens.  Translation = they’ve got a little something for everyone.

If you do go and see them, be sure to tell Scott that you read about him on Only Good Movies.

Now on with the show…(BTW, Scott’s third from the left in the picture below)

Only Good Movies:  What’s the first movie you remember seeing?
Scott Matthews:  American Grafitti at the drive-in with my mom and one of her friends.

OGM:  If you only had a few hours to live and could do nothing but watch five movies, which films would you select?
SM:  A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Interview with a Vampire, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and Jaws.

OGM:  What’s your favorite movie?
SM:  Die Hard.  Basically, it reminds me of high school and my first memories of going out by myself. I don’t know why, but it does.  And it’s got the best villain, I think, of all time.

OGM:  What’s your least favorite movie?
SM:  Mamma Mia!.  It’s the only movie I’ve ever walked out of in the theater.  As soon as Pierce Brosnan started singing, I was out of there.

OGM:  Do you subscribe to an online rental service like Netflix or Blockbuster Online?  Why or why not?
SM:  No.  I try to go to the movies at least three times a month, and I usually buy at least one movie a day from the $5 bin.

OGM:  In 50 years, which modern movies do you think will be viewed as classics?
SM:  The Big LebowskiOffice Space.  Lots of movies that currently have cult followings.  Plus, Forrest Gump.

OGM:  If you see a movie based on a book, are you then more or less likley to read the book?
SM:  Probably less, because I’m too lazy to read.

OGM:  Who’s your favorite celebrity?
SM:  I like Kurt Russell and Tom Hanks.

OGM:  Is there any actor or actress whose movies you actively avoid?
SM:  Anything with Lindsay Lohan.  I think she’s an overrated slut.

OGM:  How do you feel about all the remakes of older and classic films?
SM:  I don’t care for them, but usually they have hotter women than the originals.  For example, The Fog, Halloween, and Ocean’s Eleven.

OGM:  Which actor or actress do you find most attractive?
SM:  Kate Blanchett.  She’s not really what I’d call “sexy,” but she’s a classic beauty.

OGM:  Do you read movie reviews?  If so, which critics do you read most often, and why do you like them?
SM:  I don’t read reviews, but there’s a guy out of Dallas that I listen to on the radio named Gary Cogill.  Nine times out of ten, I agree with what he says.

OGM:  What type of people annoy you when going to a movie theater?
SM:  Fat, loud teenagers.

OGM:  Do you consider movies to be works of art?
SM:  Sure.  I think The Red Violin is an incredible work of art.  I highly recommend it.

OGM:  What type of candy or drink do you consider essential to your movie watching experience?
SM:  My $5 Coke Icee.

So there you have it.  Thanks to Scott Matthews for stopping by to conduct this interview for Movies and the Masses.  Check back often, as we have all kinds of other goodness on tap for you.  And while you’re waiting for said goodness to manifest, why not check out these previous OGM interviews:
