Chris Brown – A Brief Bio

In case you‘re unfamiliar with our subject, here’s a brief introduction to the musician/actor known as Chris Brown. This information isn’t going to transform you into an urban music expert, but it will help you look less ridiculous the next time you’re trying to talk to someone younger than yourself. If you’re already familiar with the artist born Christopher Maurice Brown, then pat yourself on the back. You’re probably really cool.

Signed to a record deal with Jive Records at the age of 15, Chris Brown released his self-titled debut album in November of 2005, and it debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. It would go on to achieve double platinum status, with hits including “Run It!”, “Gimme That,” “Say Goodbye,” and “Yo (Excuse Me Miss)”.

Brown soon began acting, showing up on TV shows such as One on One and The O.C. In 2007, he would make his film debut in Stomp the Yard.

His second album, Exclusive, was released in 2007 and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. Hits from the album include “Kiss Kiss,” “With You,” and “Forever.” He also started showing up on songs and albums by other artists, including Nas, Ludacris, and T-Pain. In 2008, Billboard Magazine named him the top artist of the year.

In December of 2009, the latest Chris Brown album, Graffiti, was released to disappointing sales. The album debuted at fifty-five on the Billboard 200, and several singles were cancelled.

Then he really hit the big time, but not in the way he would’ve wanted. On March 5th of 2009, Brown was charged with felony assault and making criminal threats against his former girlfriend, R&B singer Rihanna. The photo of Rihanna’s bruised face made the rounds, and Brown lost commercial endorsements and had his music pulled from numerous radio stations. In August of that same year, he was sentenced to six months of community service, one year of domestic violence counseling, and five years of probation. He also has to stay away from Rihanna due to a five-year restraining order.

Brown’s fourth studio album, F.A.M.E., is scheduled for a 2011 release. The title is said to stand for “Forgiving All My Enemies.” During the 2010 BET Awards, he announced to his fans, “I let y’all down before, but I won’t do it again…I promise.”

Here’s hoping that he keeps his promise.
